2020 Premier League Darts – Week 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second night of the Premier League Darts season takes place on Thursday evening when the nine men are joined by Fallon Sherrock, the contender at the Motorpoint Arena on what looks an excellent night of darts in Nottingham.

Sherrock took the darting world by storm at the World Championship and there might be even more pressure and scrutiny on her in this match. That one and four others make up what looks to be an excellent evening of darts.

Rob Cross vs Nathan Aspinall

The opening match of the night sees the man who produced some of his best ever darts at the weekend in action as Nathan Aspinall faces a player who is flattering to deceive at the present time in Rob Cross.

If you take the results of the last week into account then Aspinall is the only winner of this match, but throwing a load of good darts on the floor in a silent room is a whole world away from this raucous atmosphere, and while Aspinall won in the Premier League last week, we shouldn’t forget how ordinary his performance was. An 89 average is not going to get it done at this level. Cross actually performed better than expected last week and had a win over Michael Smith at the weekend. My gut feeling is Cross is overpriced here but Cross winning helps one of my outrights so I won’t risk things on a gut feel.

Gerwyn Price vs Michael Smith

The second match of the night sees the Welsh star Gerwyn Price taking on the power scorer Michael Smith in a clash which could very well be the game of the evening when we look back on proceedings when all is said and done.

My big concern about Smith going into the tournament was the amount of doubles he misses and it didn’t take long for that to come to fruition, with him scoring brilliantly last week but coughing up a load of chances against Glen Durrant. The same is often my fear for Price and hey presto he did likewise so I couldn’t possibly part with any of my hard earned on the match result between these two, particularly when they went to a deciding leg at the weekend. I do fancy them both for a number of 180s and in a match which looks like having 11 or 12 legs we can see a 6.5 line covered here.

Gary Anderson vs Peter Wright

The middle match of the night sees the two Scotland World Cup players in action when the former champion of the world Gary Anderson goes up against the man currently occupying that title in the shape of Peter Wright.

Both men played some nice darts last week. Anderson came out on top against Daryl Gurney while a series of missed doubles by Wright proved costly as he dropped to a 7-5 defeat to Michael van Gerwen. I’m expecting both men to come on for that, especially Anderson, whose return to the high heights of the game continued when he took down the opening Players Championship event of the campaign in fine style on Saturday. Both men might take some beating here so the draw shouldn’t be ruled out but I’m happy to sit this one out.

Glen Durrant vs Fallon Sherrock

The main focus on the night is without doubt going to be the penultimate match of the evening as the three-time world champion Glen Durrant takes on the woman who is making huge stories for the sport in Fallon Sherrock.

I’m a big fan of Fallon and what she is doing in the game right now and achieving is fantastic but I made reference to the fact that Glen Durrant has had a right touch by drawing her as a contender in my outright preview and I’m sticking to that. There are two reasons for that. There is probably more pressure on Fallon to deliver here than at Alexandra Palace to a) justify her selection and b) highlight that run wasn’t a fluke. The other reason is that unlike most of the contenders Fallon has no home advantage and while the crowd will be on her side it isn’t like Durrant will be getting a Scottish backlash like if he was playing Anderson or Thornton or the like. I’m sure Fallon will give this a good go but from their BDO days together Durrant will know what to expect and I expect him to take care of this one in fine style.

Daryl Gurney vs Michael van Gerwen

The final match of the evening sees two more heavy scorers going at it when Daryl Gurney goes up against Michael van Gerwen for what could be two valuable points for both men even this early in the competition.

Both men went the distance in their opening matches last week, van Gerwen held his nerve and took advantage of a load of missed chances to win 7-5 against Peter Wright while Gurney faded fast towards the end to lose 7-5 to Gary Anderson. If we thought last week’s win was a sign that MVG was used to his new darts and set to dominate again we should probably think otherwise as he failed in both Players Championship tournaments, losing to Brendan Dolan and Jamie Hughes. I don’t necessarily think he’ll lose here but I can’t be backing him to win but likewise I can’t really be backing Gurney either. I’ll sit this out.
