2020 Scottish Open Golf – Round 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second round of the Scottish Open takes place on Friday as the field go out at the Renaissance Club once again all looking to make it through to the last 36 holes and ensure a slice of some of the many riches on offer this week.

This being a Rolex Series means those who make the cut are guaranteed a pay day but for those who started out well on Thursday it will be about much more than that. They will be looking to use Friday to get themselves in a position whereby they could win the tournament.

Round 1 Recap

After a pretty low scoring opening 18 holes it is Lee Westwood who will take a one shot lead into the second round. He sits on top of the leaderboard on nine under with Alexander Bjork and Joost Luiten one back on eight under. Scott Jamieson is on seven under with a group of three on six under including Robert Rock. The first of our pre-tournament picks is in the group on five under. That Marcus Kinhult and he is alongside Min Woo Lee and Lucas Herbert among others.

It was a day to forget for us on the betting front with Jason Scrivener getting mullered in his three ball and Benjamin Hebert losing his by a shot. We then ran into a bit of bad luck when Andy Sullivan shot four under for his opening round but that wasn’t even good enough for a place in the first round leader market which was annoying to say the least. That means we’ve got a bit of work to do for the rest of the week.

Friday Betting

We have a second round leader market to get stuck into over the course of Friday but with the weather conditions set to be pretty normal right throughout the day I’m not sure there is any edge for us to take into battle. This tournament is going to come to life over the weekend when the storms hit and the winds get up but we might see much more of what we got on Thursday replicated on Friday. That may well mean that Lee Westwood can stay out in front but his nine under was helped by two eagles and you wouldn’t think he is going to do that again. The consistency of his closer challengers Alexander Bjork and Joost Luiten is up for debate and I guess the same could be said of Scott Jamieson. Basically I don’t really like anything in the market.

Friday 3 Balls

As with Thursday, the field goes out in threes on Friday and they are in the same groups as they were on the opening day. Those who were out in the morning off the first tee on Thursday will go out in the afternoon off the tenth tee on Friday and those who were off in the afternoon on Thursday will go out in the morning off the opposite tee to the one they went off at in the first 18 holes. That means that the pick of the morning groups will see Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Rasmus Hojgaard out at 07.57 BST with Tommy Fleetwood, Bernd Wiesberger and Robert MacIntyre out 11 minutes later. The pick of the afternoon groups is the one which is out at 12.38 which sees Matthew Fitzpatrick out alongside Sam Horsfield and Padraig Harrington. My bet comes in one of the afternoon groups.

Pablo Larrazabal/Thomas Bjorn/ Min Woo Lee

Match tees off at 13.00 BST

One of the later groups off the first tee sees the leader of the morning wave from Thursday in action as the Vic Open champion Min Woo Lee goes out alongside the entertaining Spanish player Pablo Larrazabal and the former Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn.

To say Min Woo Lee won this match on Thursday would be an understatement. His five under par was six too good for Larrazabal and 11 shots better than the six over par that Bjorn posted and I don’t really see anything changing on Friday. I noted that Min Woo Lee mentioned that this course is very similar in make up to the one he won the Vic Open on and that he quietly fancied his chances. Min Woo Lee was in the top 40 for strokes gained from tee to green on Thursday despite playing in the harder conditions. The other two were outside the top 100 and I think that is a key statistic here. Given the comfort of the Australian on this course I like him to win this group again on Friday and the fact he won so easily on Thursday makes me surprised that he is odds against here. I’m happy to take it though.

Back M.Woo Lee to beat P.Larrazabal & T.Bjorn for a 3/10 stake at 2.15 with William Hill
