2020 St Leger Festival – Day 2 and Navan Tips and Betting Preview

It is the second day of the St Leger meeting up in Doncaster on Thursday and while that forms the major attention in the racing world, it is by no means the only action that is taking place across a decent day in the UK and Ireland.

Having gone through the Doncaster card we’ve picked out one bet from that meeting and a look at all the other cards have thrown up one other for us which comes from across the Irish Sea from Navan. That is our opening bet.

3.50 Navan

16 runners line up for this 10 furlong handicap where Joseph O’Brien holds the key, saddling the Even money favourite in Baron Samedi & the 2nd favourite Cerberus at 6/1.  The former is officially 13lbs well in so should be hard to beat but the ground may not be softer & his price means there’s value elsewhere.  Cerberus is a decent hurdler but hasn’t been seen since running ok in the Triumph Hurdle so cannot be backed with confidence.

Betting

Lord Park is drawn wide but rates a solid each way bet for Mick Halford who has his string in fine fettle (3 winners & 3 more placed from his last 10 runners).  A maiden, who’s raced 6 times (all this year), he looks ready to strike.  After 3 no shows in maidens in a bid to get a handicap mark, he’s been placed in all 3 handicaps, finishing 3/11, 2/16 and 4/16, all over this trip.  Surprisingly he’s been dropped 2lbs for his run last time where he was around 1 length 4th in a big field at Naas, holding every chance until hold up horse Layfayette came fast & late down the outside to land the spoils.  It looks to me like this better ground will suit & his draw may not be an issue given the lack of pace in the race.  Provided his jockey doesn’t make too much use of him early (I felt that scuppered his chance last time), he’s very likely to be one that gives the O’Brien pair most to do.

Tips

PLACED – Back Lord Park (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 11.00 William Hill BOG (¼ odds 1-4)

The straight 6 furlong awaits these 16 handicapper’s & James Fanshawe’s Fresh is a red hot favourite, with current quotes of less than 2/1.  That’s off the back of a win last time out, his first time in a handicap.  A 7lb higher mark may underestimate this exposed type but he’s up in class, on a straight track & having only his 2nd start on turf.  He’s not a betting proposition.  Gunmetal will surely win again one day & I’ve backed him more than once over the last few years but I can’t keep giving him my money.  Breanski was very close to being a bet especially as Jedd O’Keeffe & Andrea Atzeni teamed up to win with Strait of Hormuz on Day 1 of the Leger meeting but the suspicion is he’s better over a furlong further.

Betting

Call Me Ginger must go close with Kevin Stott back on board for an in form Jim Goldie.  The trainer has just 4 declared at this meeting this week, with 3 of them already running on Day 1.  They finished 4/20 at 18/1, 2/11 at 10/3 & 1/11 at 12/1 so it’s fair to say this is a yard in form.  But there’s much more to this horses’ chance than that.  First up he’s got a nice draw for a hold up horse, drawn bang in the middle of 2 likely front runners & he seems to be running off a winnable mark.  He finished with a late rattle at Chester last time to finish 5th & that’s a good performance at a track where it pays to be handy whilst previous to that, he went off 3rd favourite in the Stewards Cup consolation race (ran poorly though) & was 2nd in the Scottish Stewards Cup.  This race should be run to suit & he’s most likely to finish fast & late.  Despite the big field, there doesn’t appear to be many in with chances so he’s hard to keep out of the reckoning at a nice each way price.

Tips

PLACED – Back Call Me Ginger (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 7.50 Betfair BOG (¼ odds 1-4)
