2020 Tour Championship Golf – Round 1 Tips and Betting Preview

The opening round of the Tour Championship takes place on Friday when the 30 men who have made it through to the tournament gets to see the East Lake Country Club in a competitive scenario for the first time this week.

There are just 72 holes left in the PGA Tour season and with a huge bounty at the end of the week we are sure to get plenty of attacking and aggressive golf right from the outset as the best on Tour this year seek the last title of the season.

First Round Leader

In normal times we would have a good look at the first round leader market with everyone off a level playing field but that isn’t the case this week. Dustin Johnson starts off on -10 this week and only three players are within four shots of him so it is hard to see anyone from outside that quartet leading after the opening 18 holes. That is factored into the bookmaker odds though so there isn’t much in the way of value there.

Of those who are five under or worse you’ve got to think we would be betting for a place if we take any of those. Someone from that range will shoot a decent round but bookmakers are only paying three places so that probably whittles the options down somewhat. I’m not really one for betting on something that is unlikely to win though so this market isn’t really for me. I’ll wait until the field is bunched up a bit more over the weekend before targeting these markets.

Friday 2 Balls

The field go out in two balls throughout this tournament which makes betting on each round a lot less challenging. On Friday the pairs are determined by the position players are in the FedEx Cup rankings which means that numbers 29 and 30 – Billy Horschel and Cameron Champ – are first off the first tee while numbers one and two are last off. That means that Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm will be out together teeing off at 19.20 BST. Justin Thomas and Webb Simpson are the penultimate pair onto the course 10 minutes prior to that. We’ll go with one bet for the opening round.

Collin Morikawa vs Daniel Berger

Match tees off at 19.00 BST

The third to last group on the golf course on Friday sees the USPGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa out alongside the man who pipped him to the first title back after lockdown in Daniel Berger in a pairing which sees two quality ball strikers going at it.

I’m banking on experience being the order of the day here. You rarely see debutants go brilliantly around here and those who are used to the pressure, scrutiny and profile of this event usually fare better to begin with. Berger has been here before and although he hasn’t qualified recently because of injuries, he’ll know what the place and event is all about. It is all a bit new to Morikawa, who in recent weeks has offered up a poor opening 18 holes before coming back strongly over the weekend. Berger is usually fast out of the traps and while there isn’t much between them game wise, that extra experience here may well be vital. I’ll take Berger in this one.
