2020 Tour Championship Golf – Round 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second round of the Tour Championship takes place in Atlanta on Saturday and by the end of the 18 holes at the East Lake Country Club there will be just 36 holes remaining in what has been an incredible PGA Tour season given all that is going on in the world.

The first 18 holes delivered the sort of quality we expected from the top 30 players on the Tour this season and the way everything is poised heading into Saturday, on a brilliant golf course we are sure to get much more of the same.

Round 1 Recap

Dustin Johnson took a two shot lead into the tournament with him but he has already seen that wiped out and it is he and Jon Rahm who share the lead heading into the second round on 13 under par. Justin Thomas closed the gap on Johnson too and he sits two back on 11 under with Rory McIlroy another two shots back on nine under and Abraham Ancer the only other player within six of the lead. He goes into the second round on seven under having started the week just one under so he was in good form.

Speaking of good form we got off and running for the week with a two ball winner as Daniel Berger overcame the challenge of Collin Morikawa. It wasn’t always pretty and at one stage he trailed by three but a double bogey from nowhere on 17 from the USPGA champion put Berger in front and he held onto his advantage up the last to deliver an odds against winner for us, one we will hope to build on for the remainder of the week.

Saturday Betting

We have a second round leader market but as you would expect it is dominated by the front two and the way they are playing right now I’m not sure there is a whole lot of value taking them on. Everyone except Justin Thomas are four behind Johnson and Rahm and as good as he is that is a heck of a deficit to make up on two class acts. Thomas could catch them I guess but the way DJ and Rahm are playing it is so hard to see one of them not shooting under par so Thomas would need something special to lead on his own at the end of the day. The odds are about right on the chasers given their chances and I don’t fancy choosing between Rahm and Johnson right now so I’ll leave this market well alone.

Saturday 2 Balls

Once again the field are going out in two balls all off the first tee on Saturday with the last pair off being the same as Friday with Dustin Johnson out alongside Jon Rahm. They go off at 19.05 BST while the penultimate group of Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy head out 10 minutes prior to that. Among the other groups to catch the eye on Saturday is the one between the two young guns Collin Morikawa and Cameron Champ, two players we will hear a lot about over the next 12 months or so. I’ll go with one which comes in one of the other groups.

Brendon Todd vs Sungjae Im

Match tees off at 18.35 BST

Two men who go into the second round sat on six under par are Brendon Todd and Sungjae Im and they will both be looking for a big 18 holes to push themselves either into contention for a possible win in the tournament or for a much bigger pay day come the end of proceedings.

Im started the week a shot ahead of Todd so the fact that they are level now shows that Todd would have won this pairing on Friday and I think he wins it again on Saturday. To be fair to the Korean, he had it going at four under at one stage on Friday but his aggressive style caught him out and he dropped two shots late on. Im didn’t drive the ball very well on Friday and missed some short putts and that is a microcosm of his form of late. Todd has no such issues. This long game was in fantastic order and he’s been putting brilliantly for a while. This course suits a plotter who plays from the short grass and that is the profile Todd has. I like him in this two ball.
