2020 US Open Golf – Final Round Tips and Betting Preview

The second major champion of 2020 will be crowned on Sunday evening when the US Open comes to a close as the final round of the tournament is played at Winged Foot in New York. This event has been bubbling at a low heat but could come to the boil here.

With only one player in the top 10 going into the final round having won the tournament before, we are looking at a new champion being crowned on what will be the biggest day in the career of whoever it is that takes it.

Round 3 Recap

The number of players who are under par for the tournament has been whittled down to three and it is Matthew Wolff who will take a two shot lead into the final round of what is just his second major championship. He leads from Bryson DeChambeau who is three under with Louis Oosthuizen the only other man in red figures at one under. A trio of players sit level for the week. They are Xander Schauffele, Harris English and Hideki Matsuyama. Rory McIlroy is another shot back on one under.

It wasn’t the best day for us betting wise on Saturday with Brendon Todd running into a storm of a round by Matthew Wolff, although in fairness to Todd he didn’t have anything like his best golf with him anyway so the two ball bet we had never really stood much of a chance of landing. That leaves us wanting a big Sunday to salvage something from the tournament.

Sunday Betting

I’ll take a couple of bets as we head into Sunday which look overpriced. I’m not convinced Matt Wolff gets the job done here I have to say. I say that because he’s out alongside Bryson DeChambeau and this wouldn’t be the first time he has found it difficult to play alongside him. Most players do. By the same token I’m not sure DeChambeau has the touch to win this while Louis Oosthuizen doesn’t inspire me as much as I’d like either. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Xander Schauffele in this tournament yet and yet he is level par and well in the hunt. He is someone we know won’t go away in the final round and if he can discover his best form off the tee, which is the only area he is losing significant ground to those around him, then he could win the major he’s been threatening to for a while.

The other bet I like is for Zach Johnson to make the top five. He goes into the final round on two over par and that might well be the figure required to land a spot in the top five. Johnson is gaining more than nine strokes on the field in putting this week with the only area he is losing ground on the field being in the approach where he is usually so reliable. I expect the final round to be a little more about fairways and greens than it has been so far this week and that is Zach Johnson’s game in a nutshell. The 7/1 on him improving his current T8 position into a top five looks a bit big to me.

Sunday 2 Balls

Once again the field will go out in two balls on Sunday with the final pair of Matthew Wolff and Bryson DeChambeau out off the first tee at 18.30 BST. Louis Oosthuizen is alongside Hideki Matsuyama 11 minutes earlier. The third to last group sees Xander Schauffele and Harris English partner each other at 18.08. Earlier groups of note include Billy Horschel and Justin Thomas at 16.51 BST and Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey at 16.40 BST. It is that last pairing which catches my eye from a betting point of view.

Dustin Johnson vs Paul Casey

Match tees off at 16.40 BST

Two men who know all about featuring at the business end of majors are Paul Casey and Dustin Johnson and they go out alongside each other in the middle of the pack in their final round. Both begin on +5 for the week so if they are going to win the tournament they will need a great round and a lot of help.

I don’t see that happening for either. The good round might happen but there is too much quality above them in the leaderboard to let them in and I think Johnson will be aware of that. We often see in these elite competitors that when the chance to win has gone their motivation disappears with it and they struggle to deliver the goods. I can see that happening with Johnson. There is nothing to suggest it will with Casey though. High finishes are more important to him for things like FedEx Cup and Ryder Cup and he’s been out of the event since the opening 18 holes having carded an opening 76. He has shot 70 and 69 since then so he hasn’t packed it in and at a big price he could well deliver the goods in this two ball.
