2020 US Open Tennis – Day 3 Tips and Betting Preview

The second round of the singles draws begin in New York on Wednesday as the second Grand Slam of the year continues as the US Open continues to flourish despite the testing situation the world finds itself in. The doubles also begins on a good day of action.

In the main the big names all made it safely through their opening round matches and will feel in the tournament as a result so we should expect the quality to ramp up a little bit which should make for some even better tennis.

Day 2 Recap

It was another day of five-set epics and relatively smooth passages for the big names on Tuesday. The likes of Dominic Thiem, Serena Williams, Sofia Kenin, Madison Keys and Daniil Medvedev all made it through without too many difficulties but former champions Andy Murray and Marin Cilic both had to come from two sets down to seal their progression in the event. Another former champion couldn’t turn a deficit around though as Venus Williams lost out in straight sets, albeit in a match she was the outsider in.

It was a total day to forget for us betting wise though as of the four bets which have been completed at the time of writing this preview all of them lost. I knew it wasn’t going to be my day when Jannik Sinner looked to be cruising to the second round when two sets up but then he picked up an injury and spent the last three sets on one leg and still only went down in a deciding tiebreak. That was about as good as it got with the Pliskova bet still to run.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

The former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has the honour of opening up play inside the main stadium when she takes on Kateryna Kozlova in a match the Czech will be expected to win. We then get to see one of the pick of the second round matches to close out the day session as Novak Djokovic takes to the court to continue to maintain his perfect record for 2020. Kyle Edmund will be the man looking to become the first to beat the Serb star this year.

The night session gets up and running with the 2018 champion Naomi Osaka who seems to have the night sessions all to herself this week. The Japanese superstar takes on the feisty Italian player Camila Giorgi for a place in the third round before the exciting Greek ace Stefanos Tsitsipas is on the main stage for the first time this week. He meets the lowly ranked American player Maxime Cressy for a place in the next stage.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

For the second round in succession the former winner here Angelique Kerber gets the show up and running on the Louis Armstrong Stadium when she meets her compatriot Anna-Lena Friedsam. It is then the turn of another German to take to the court when Alexander Zverev continues his quest for a maiden Grand Slam title. He comes up against Brandon Nakashima for a place in the next stage. The pick of the women’s matches in this round shuts out the day session on this court when the number one seed Karolina Pliskova takes on Caroline Garcia in what should be a good match.

The night session on this court gets up and running with the exciting Canadian player Denis Shapovalov on show. The youngster takes on Kwon Soonwoo of Korea for a chance of competing in the third round of the tournament. A busy schedule on Armstrong concludes with a competitive looking encounter as Madison Brengle takes on the powerful Ukrainian player Danaya Yastremska to finish off the third day.

Court 17

Petra Martic is the first seed on show on Court 17 on Wednesday. The eighth seed takes on Katerina Bondarenko in what could be a lengthy encounter. Two Americans go at it when they are finished when Catherine Bellis meets Jennifer Brady with the winner of that potentially playing the number one seed in the third round. The men make up the rest of the singles schedule on this court as home favourite Jack Sock looks to pick up another win when he meets Adrian Mannarino before the highest ranked American left in the men’s draw – Taylor Fritz – takes on Gilles Simon.

Best of the Rest

The schedule is still good enough for there to be some good action around the grounds for those of us with access to all the courts. Kiki Mladenovic and David Goffin headline the play over on Court 5 while Filip Krajinovic and Alison Riske are some of the players on show out on Court 11. Anett Kontaveit and Jan-Lennard Struff will be on show on Court 7 while youngsters Hubert Hurkacz and Borna Coric will look to come through on Court 8.

Men’s Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets in the men’s draw on Wednesday with the first of those siding with the 4.5 game handicap that Gilles Simon is in receipt of against Taylor Fritz. Fritz, like many Americans has a big reputation and a big game, but also like those from his country consistency doesn’t always come with it and I didn’t think he looked brilliant in the first round against Dennis Koepfer. It is noticeable that the French players have been going well so far this week and I suspect some of that is playing against each other during lockdown. Simon routed Modvedev in Marseille just prior to lockdown and made the Queens final last year so he doesn’t mind facing big players with big games. I don’t know if the veteran Frenchman has it in him to win here but he can certainly keep the American honest.

The other bet I like is for Steve Johnson to take care of Ricardas Berankis. Johnson was on court for 3h50 in the first round but he wasn’t involved in many lengthy rallies even going to a deciding tiebreak as he was up against John Isner. Although the American was on court for a while, he was actually only out there for 45 minutes longer than his Lithuanian opponent who we know will have had to do a lot of running in his opening round match. These courts suit the game of Johnson and now that he has taken out the seed in this mini section he will see the chance to go deep in his home major. That motivation can get the job done for him.

Women’s Betting

There are two that I like in the women’s draw as well on Wednesday. The first of those comes in the form of the 12 seed Marketa Vondrousova who I’m expecting to pick up a relatively comfortable win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Vondrousova made very light work of her first round match and she plays the player ranked one higher here. Sasnovich had a weird first round game which went three sets and she was on court for more than two hours which isn’t great. To her credit she came through but I think she will have to raise her level if she is to come out on top here. I expect Vondrousova to cover a 3.5 game handicap.

One seed I’m not so sure will cover the handicap is Danaya Yastremska when she takes on Madison Brengle. I mentioned in the first round how Brengle seems to push good players the distance without getting over the line and we could very well see another of those circumstances here too. In saying that Yastremska has a habit of going missing in her matches and then getting on her own back and allowing her opponents either a route back into a match or some cheap games to stay in it. Brengle had a pretty routine win in the opening round while Yastremska was taken the distance. At the very least she might have to go the distance again here that’s if Brengle doesn’t actually win the match.

Daily Accumulator

For the second day in a row our accumulator was let down by one selection which was annoying to say the least. We’ll go again on Wednesday though with a fivefold.
