2020 US Open Tennis – Men’s Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

After two incredibly entertaining and captivating women’s semi-finals it is the turn of the last four men standing in the US Open to battle it out for a place in the final on the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Friday night.

We have three of the top five seeds in the men’s draw here as well as the big surprise package albeit one who has been here before, so there is plenty to look forward to on what should be a belting night of Grand Slam tennis.

Pablo Carreno Busta vs Alexander Zverev

A place in a maiden Grand Slam final awaits one of Pablo Carreno Busta or Alexander Zverev when they collide in the first semi-final of the competition. This will be the Spaniard’s second semi in New York while the German is here for the first time but did taste the occasion in the Australian Open earlier in the year.

Both these men have fought very hard to make it through to this stage and while PCB was fortunate to survive his match with Novak Djokovic given all that went on, he made the most of it with an epic win over Denis Shapovalov in the quarter final. Usually there would be concerns that a match like that would have taken it out of him but the extra day off allays those fears somewhat. Zverev was pushed hard in the last eight too, coming from a set down to Borna Coric and given what is at stake a competitive and close match is the very least you would think we would get here.

The games line for this match is pitched at 38.5 which on the face of it looks about right but when you factor in the prize on offer I’ve got to think this is a bit on the low side. Both men will be giving their absolute all to make it to a Grand Slam final so I’m expecting a tight match where the over on that line should land. They have only met once on a hard court and the first set of that was a tiebreak. We should only need four sets to get this line cleared but who would rule out a decider? However many sets it has I like over 38.5 games here.

Daniil Medvedev vs Dominic Thiem

If the starter looks nice and competitive the main course is mouth-watering as the number three seed and beaten finalist here last year, Daniil Medvedev, takes on the three-time Grand Slam finalist and second seed Dominic Thiem in a match between two players who have been right on the top of their game in this fortnight.

Medvedev still hasn’t dropped a set in this tournament although how Andrey Rublev didn’t take one off him in the quarter final only he will know. Medvedev is hitting the ball a lot cleaner than he did possibly even last year and showed a smartness in that quarter final that could serve him well here. The only negative over Medvedev is his conditioning which looked a bit shaky in the last round and you’d think he’s got to be ready to go for close to four hours here.

That makes me think that Thiem is worth taking at odds against. In normal circumstances I wouldn’t go near him as this is a 50:50 contest but Thiem’s better fitness could very well be the thing that wins it for him. They both have a power game and it is hard to see how this doesn’t turn into a physical encounter and while Medvedev might have the edge on this surface, it is only an edge and that fitness thing balances it out if not tips it the way of the Austrian. He’s the bet for me.
