2020 WDF Remote Darts League – Saturday 18th April Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The WDF Remote Darts League gets going in the deep end of Saturday evening with all 10 men in the field showcasing their form for the first time this week as they play from their own homes for our entertainment.

Although this is the first of nine nights in the league phase of the competition, all 10 men involved will be eager to get points on the board straight away so we should be in for a competitive night of darts, where hopefully the standard lives up to expectation.

The Format

If you are a fan of the Premier League Darts event that the PDC hold each year this format will be familiar to you as it is very similar to that. The 10 men face each other once over the first nine evenings of the competition with the top four in the league table progressing to finals night in the 10th evening. The winner of the semi-finals and final is crowned the champion. Each match in the league phase is the best of 12 legs and players get two points for a win and one for a draw. The whole event will be shown live on the Remote Darts League channel on YouTube.

Fixtures

James Richardson v Alan Norris

Gary Robson v Dean Winstanley

Wes Newton v Jim Williams

Tony O’Shea v Paul Hogan

John Walton v Darryl Fitton

Preview

The night begins with the two most recent holders of a PDC Tour card as James Richardson, who lost his at the end of last season, takes on Alan Norris who did likewise but whose fate was sealed quite early last year. Two enigmas then battle it out in the second match of the opening evening as Gary Robson, seemingly forever an underachiever, takes on Dean Winstanley, who in his pomp would have really fancied this challenge.

It is largely BDO all the way for the rest of the evening. The current occupier of top spot in those rankings and finalist in the World Championship, Jim Williams, will be hoping to get the better of former UK Open finalist Wes Newton. Two men very much on the BDO scene meet in the penultimate match of the night when Tony O’Shea takes on the quarter finalist at the o2, Paul Hogan, before the veterans round off the night when the 2001 world champion John Walton faces the Dazzler himself Darryl Fitton.

Betting

As you would expect for a tournament of this kind I’m going to ease my way into it a little bit. The issue we have is some of these players have been more active in recent times than others and then of those who have been active some have been competing at a higher level to others so I’m going to take a night or two to gauge where we’re at before getting stuck in. With 10 nights on offer we can afford to do that.

There is one I think should be a safe bet though and that is for Darryl Fitton to beat John Walton. Walton hasn’t played tournament darts at the top level for more than a couple of years and was fading when he was last doing so. There is no getting away from the fact that Fitton is not the player of 5-10 years ago but it was only two months ago he was within a couple of wins of a PDC Tour card and you don’t get that close to one of them if you hold the wrong end of the dart that’s for sure. Fitton was always one of the heaviest scorers in the game, in either code, but couldn’t buy a double under pressure. Unless he’s got his entire family watching he’ll be under no pressure here and the even money he takes out the eldest man in the field looks a bit of a gift it must be said.
