2020 World Grand Prix Darts – Day 4 Tips and Betting Preview

The second round of the World Grand Prix comes to a close on Friday evening when another exciting looking session of action is played out behind closed doors in the bio-secure bubble at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

We’ve seen some compelling darts so far in this tournament and with eight good players on show we should get another great night of arrers as we finalise the quarter final line up in the latest televised event.

Ryan Joyce vs Dave Chisnall

The opening match of the night sees the man who took out the world champion Peter Wright back in action when the debutant Ryan Joyce takes on the beaten finalist of 12 months ago in Dave Chisnall in what should be an entertaining opening to the evening.

Both these men looked extremely comfortable with the format in the first round and played well as a result of that. Joyce will know it was Chisnall he beat to win his only PDC title so far earlier in the year at the Summer Series while Chisnall will know what can be achieved if he gives Joyce a chance in this match. There is every reason to think we might see quite a tight contest here because their last three clashes have gone to a deciding leg. Much was made of how well Chisnall played in the first round and rightly so but Joyce averaged over 96 with the double start in beating Wright. I think playing Joyce to win a couple of sets is the way to go here.

Gabriel Clemens vs Jeffrey de Zwaan

The second match of the evening sees two of the finest from the continent battling it out for a spot in their first quarter final in this tournament when the German Giant himself Gabriel Clemens takes on the man playing with the house money in Jeffrey de Zwaan.

Clemens took care of Nathan Aspinall in the opening round and did so with the minimum of fuss which suggests there could be a lot more to come from him with the format moving up. De Zwaan got the better of Jamie Hughes in a match which swung one way and then the other and the thought is that the Dutchman will need to up his game from that effort if he is going to come through here. I’m on Clemens outright and that is enough interest for me in this encounter.

Gerwyn Price vs Kim Huybrechts

The penultimate match of the night sees the only seeded player on show taking to the stage when Gerwyn Price takes on Kim Huybrechts in a battle which will open a door for whoever wins to go very deep in the competition for the first time.

Price wasn’t convincing against Jermaine Wattimena and his form in this tournament and format suggests he is vulnerable here but I’m not convinced Huybrechts is the man to take advantage. In saying that, if Huybrechts can get into the legs well he can have a lot of pressure on Price and his doubling which can be hit or miss in these short sprints. Price is in decent form overall though so I don’t really want to take him on. I’ll leave this one alone.

Joe Cullen vs Jonny Clayton

The final match of the night is very much likely to be the closest as far as the bookmakers are concerned. In some places Joe Cullen and Jonny Clayton can’t be separated although some have the Welshman as a warm favourite.

That is a bit of a surprise given that Cullen offered up a much better performance in the first round in beating Daryl Gurney than Clayton did in overcoming Ian White. The scoring of Cullen was more settled and consistent and his doubling was pretty good too. This is one of those matches that could easily go to a final set and possibly even a final leg but if someone does get on top early I suspect it could be Cullen and my favouritism goes towards him for this one.
