2021 Cazoo St Leger – Big Race Tips and Betting Preview

As we move deeper into autumn it means that the end of the flat racing season is getting nearer. That comes ever closer with the final classic of the campaign, which takes place at Doncaster on Saturday afternoon.

10 horses go to post for the St Leger, and on a season where we’ve picked out a multitude of big race winners we are certainly not going to let this race go untouched. There is one selection we like in the big race.

The final classic of the season is the St Leger, run at Doncaster over a mile and three quarters.  We have an odds on favourite in the shape of Godolphin’s Hurricane Lane who looks hard to oppose given his form in 6 career starts so far.  He’s won the Dante, the Irish Derby & the Grand Prix de Paris, tasting defeat only once when 3rd in the Derby behind stablemate Adayar.  He’s bred to stay the trip but hasn’t yet gone this far & that’s arguably the only doubt although I would have a niggle if the ground firmed up.   Just in front of him in the Derby was 50/1 shot Mojo Star & he’s 2nd in the market for this at around 7/1.  He was behind the favourite in the Irish Derby but didn’t get the clearest of runs & most recently got off the mark when winning a maiden.  Aiden O’Brien runs 4 but none seem to be up to winning a race of this nature.

Betting

The number 1 challenger from Ireland is Murtagh’s Ottoman Emperor & he’s the one I see as the most likely to upset the favourite.  He’s won 4 on the spin, starting with a maiden over a mile & a quarter but has progressed winning the Group 3 Gordon Stakes on his most recent run.  He’s going from strength to strength, looks likely to relish the trip and I’m not sure he’s reached his peak.  At Goodwood, he responded well to pressure, hit the front & stayed on well inside the final furlong to last home, prevailing by half a length.  This is a step up in class but I really feel this track will suit & he looks a solid alternative to the Godolphin hotpot & a very good each way bet.

Tips

Back Ottoman Emperor (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 Boylesports BOG (⅕ odds 1-3)
