2021 cinch Championships Tennis – Day 1 Tips and Betting Preview

The opening day of the cinch Championships sees the singles draw starting at the Queens Club in London under what are set to be blue skies on another hot day in the midst of a UK heatwave which has come at just the right time for the tennis.

We have to wait until Tuesday to see the two main British stars in action and the leading couple of seeds but there is a decent cast list for an opening day on Monday, including the defending champion Feliciano Lopez who gets his title defence underway.

Centre Court

The action begins with the British wildcard Jack Draper getting a rare chance to show his talents on the big stage. He meets the third seed Jannik Sinner who will be looking to prove that he can be effective on grass as well as the other two surfaces. When they are done Cameron Norrie will take to the court looking to back up his fine clay court season. This isn’t his best surface but the same can be said of his opponent Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The defending champion Feliciano Lopez then gets his title defence underway against the qualifier Illya Marchenko before the final match on the main court sees the Australian Open semi-finalist Aslan Karatsev meeting the lucky loser Alejandro Tabilo.

Court 1

Our outright pick Reilly Opelka will get the action underway over on the second court on Monday afternoon. He meets a John Millman who has been pretty quiet for a good while now. The second match on this court sees another Brit in action when Liam Broady takes on the wily Adrian Mannarino before the singles action on Court 1 concludes with the seventh seed Lorenzo Sonego meeting the veteran player Viktor Troicki in a good looking match.

Betting

Viktor Troicki isn’t getting any younger but I fancy he could be a bit of value to take care of Lorenzo Sonego. I’m not convinced that Sonego is much of a grass court player even though he had a good run in Turkey a couple of years ago. Troicki was also in decent form on the turf a couple of years ago when he made the final of the Challenger event at Surbiton where Dan Evans beat him in the final. The Serbian took care of Ugo Humbert and Ivo Karlovic on that run.

Another thing that could swing this in the favour of Troicki is that he has come through qualifying for this tournament and played in Nottingham last week, so he has had a fair few matches on the grass this season, whereas Sonego plays on it for the first time here and could be understandably undercooked on the surface. I think there is enough in all of that to side with Troicki to come through here at a very nice price.
