Wednesday is the final day of darts of 2020 and it is a big one for the 12 players who toe the oche as there are places in the quarter final of the PDC World Darts Championship up for grabs in the two sessions of play at the Alexandra Palace in London.
The afternoon session contains three matches but has two world champions and four other heavy scorers in action for the last time this year in what should be a wonderful session of darts to build on the amazing night we saw on Tuesday.
Vincent van der Voort vs Daryl Gurney
The opening match of the day sees two men who have seen an opportunity open up in front of them meeting when Vincent van der Voort takes on Daryl Gurney. Both men have seen their ranking drop over the last 12 months or so but a win here will give it the injection it needs.
Van der Voort has come through the draw nicely so far although at the same time he has seen he has fed on the weaknesses of his two opponents and that might be an option that isn’t open to him here. That is because Gurney has looked close to his best in this tournament so far. It might be that a terrible 2020 has worked in his favour because he went in here under the radar but his own hard work deserves a lot of credit. We’ve not really seen the Northern Irishman in a battle here though in terms of having to come from behind and I’ll be interested to see if he can keep his form in that situation. The prices look about right here but nothing takes my fancy in this one.

Stephen Bunting vs Ryan Searle
The second match of the afternoon is huge for the two men involved as Stephen Bunting takes on Ryan Searle for the right to face Krzysztof Ratajski in the quarter final on Friday. That means there is an even chance that one of these two could make it through to the semi-final and pocket at least £100,000.
That makes this and possibly Friday a potentially life changing few days for one of these two men and that might add to the tension and pressure that was already going to be there anyway. In terms of averages and statistics these two are pretty evenly matched in this tournament, although Bunting might have been brought down a level by a terrible James Wade performance in the previous round. My suspicion is that missed doubles will cost ‘The Bullet’ and Searle will come out on top but he’s priced accordingly so I’ll sit this one out as well.
Devon Petersen vs Gary Anderson
The last match of the afternoon should be the pick of the matches as the South African star Devon Petersen goes up against the grouchy Scot Gary Anderson for a place in the quarter final where either Dirk van Duijvenbode or Glen Durrant will be waiting in the last eight.
The first thing to watch in this match is how Petersen conducts himself. Anderson made a big thing of the antics that Suljovic got up to in the previous round but then the South African said after his win on Tuesday that sort of thing has no place in the game so I’m expecting an even battle between two confident men and let the best one win. You’ve got to think that based on history and the doubles Petersen has been missing in this tournament that the winner will be Anderson, but the Scot hasn’t exactly been at his vintage best.
I like the 180s here. Both men know their way around the 60 and in what should be a close enough match I’m expecting the big scores to flow regularly. There won’t be any rhythm issues in this match as they both play at a similar speed and want to get on with playing a good game of darts. The 180s line is 14.5 here and when you think that Petersen has averaged two 180s for each set he has played in this tournament and Anderson is a pretty good 180 scorer himself we should get this line covered fairly early.
