2021 PDC World Darts Championship – Day 6 Afternoon Session Tips and Betting Preview

The PDC World Darts Championship continues on Sunday where we have another double session day of action with the afternoon one seeing the first and second rounds of the competition continuing inside Alexandra Palace in London.

The tournament really went up a notch on Saturday both from a competitive point of view with some fantastic matches and also a quality one with Michael van Gerwen laying a marker down for what lies ahead. His compatriot Vincent van der Voort will look to follow in his footsteps in this session.

Derk Telnekes vs Nick Kenny

The opening match of the day should be a really good one between two players who probably aren’t as known as they should be but who are perfectly good to watch in Derk Telnekes and Nick Kenny with Jermaine Wattimena the reward for the winner in the next round.

Both men have played in the BDO World Championship in the past and with that in mind both have done well to make it through to this tournament in what is their first year on the PDC tour having secured their tour cards at the beginning of the year. Telnekes came through the pro tour rankings to make it into this tournament courtesy of a decent year on the floor and European Tour scene while Kenny came out of the qualifier. Both men score heavily so this one looks to come down to who hits the doubles the best. You would think that will be Telnekes but given that both are making their debut this isn’t the easiest match to call. I’ll sit this one out although the accumulator builders among you might want to trust the Dutchman.

Jason Lowe vs Dmitriy Gorbunov

The second match of the afternoon sees a fast improving Jason Lowe taking on the Russian qualifier Dmitriy Gorbunov in what could well be a one-sided contest with the former finalist Michael Smith waiting for the winner in the second round.

Lowe is another of those players who got their tour card at the start of the season who has made it to this tournament at the first opportunity and after a very encouraging year on the tour he is ready to make his mark in this event. Gorbunov is a surprise qualifier for this competition as it is usually Boris Koltsov who comes through but of what we know of the Russian we shouldn’t expect too much. Gorbunov went to European Q-School and was pretty ordinary and the fact he wasn’t Koltsov’s partner at the World Cup suggests he isn’t going to be up to much. I’d expect Lowe to win this 3-0 but at odds on I can let it happen.

Maik Kuivenhoven vs Matthew Edgar

The last of the first round matches in the afternoon session on Sunday sees the Dutch debutant Maik Kuivenhoven taking on a player in Matthew Edgar who is making his third appearance on this stage but who is still looking for his first win.

Edgar will be pleased he isn’t facing Darius Labanauskas in this match because it is the Lithuanian who has seen him off in both his previous outings here. They are not bad defeats in isolation but we’ve seen far more seasoned players than Edgar struggle to perform on this stage while the weight of not winning a match here has weighed them down. Kuivenhoven is here on merit and he’s here on his tour results which I always prefer. He’s averaged over 90 for the season which is a fair effort as was his run to the quarter final of a European Tour event where he took care of Daryl Gurney and Glen Durrant. That line of form is the best either of these two have to offer and after qualifying for the European Championship and Players Championship Finals he has some TV experience under his belt. As the better scorer of the two I think he’s the one to be on here.

Vincent van der Voort vs Ron Meulenkamp

The afternoon action concludes with the second round clash between a pair of Dutch players as PDC World Championship regular Vincent van der Voort takes on Ron Meulenkamp for a place in the third round after Christmas.

Meulenkamp came through the opening round against Boris Krcmar but you would be stretching the truth to suggest that he was impressive in any way. That said we often see players improve after a win under their belts so we shouldn’t rule him out completely. I do think this one is all about van der Voort though, who has come to life over the last few months. He made the semi-final in one of the Winter Series events and pushed Michael van Gerwen and Jose de Sousa to deciding legs in a European Tour event and the Players Championship Finals and we know he is very comfortable on this stage from his past experiences. I think on form and past record van der Voort should be a good thing here.
