The evening session at the PDC World Darts Championship sees the first round come to an end and the second round continuing on another exciting looking night of action inside the behind closed doors setup at Alexandra Palace in London.
There was meant to be four matches on the card but a failed Covid test has put paid to one of them so we are left with three games to enjoy – a first round match and two from the second round on a competitive looking night of darts.
Keegan Brown vs Ryan Meikle
The last first round match gets the evening underway when the more experienced Keegan Brown takes on one of the better players on the Development Tour in recent times in the form of Ryan Meikle, with Dave Chisnall waiting for the winner in the second round.
Brown hasn’t always covered himself in glory on this stage but he certainly has been doing in his day job during the pandemic with him being one of the many NHS heroes who have stood up in our hour of need. That has clearly impacted on his darts game though, which quite rightly is coming secondary at the minute. We saw that in the Players Championship Finals when he couldn’t beat a Gary Anderson who was on one leg and there for the taking. Meikle has had issues of his own this year which has affected his form but he has got better the longer it has gone on and clearly has had the better preparation for this contest. Both men have something to prove on this stage but I fancy Meikle to edge this one.

Jeffrey de Zwaan vs Ryan Searle
We move into the second round for the remainder of the night and that starts with what could be one of the matches of the tournament between two players who like to get on with it and plough in the big scores as Jeffrey de Zwaan takes on Ryan Searle.
Searle has already been in a cracking contest when he finally got over the line in what turned into a bit of an epic with Dan Lauby and this one could easily turn into another quickly. De Zwaan hasn’t had the best year on the tour but he seems to come alive when he is on a big stage, regularly averaging on or around the 100 mark and that is what I expect him to do here so I expect this one to go close. These two are serial 180 hitters so I’m expecting there to be quite a few of them in a match where the pace is going to be very good. The 180 line for this match is 9.5 so if this does go the distance we only need one 180 per player per set. They both score much heavier than that though so I like the over to land.
Jonny Clayton vs John Henderson
The final match of the night sees the World Cup winner Jonny Clayton looking to make it through to the third round when he goes up against a John Henderson who might well still be counting his lucky stars that he is still in the tournament after a terrible first round display.
Henderson was terrible in his win over Marko Kantele and his statistics actually don’t do him justice. The six 180s he hit flattered him but it was his finishing that was a big concern. He checked out to 33% but only hit doubles on 50% of the turns that he aimed at them in and that has to improve if he is going to have any chance in this match. I still don’t think he’ll win because Clayton has really turned a corner in the last three months or so and is ready to go deep in this competition. The double troubles that he has had seem to be a thing of the past and he is a very confident animal these days. He is scoring heavily and is always on or around the 100 average in the big matches. I think his consistency will get the better of Henderson whose missed doubles may well haunt him this time.
