2021 PDC World Darts Championship – Third Quarter Tips and Betting Preview

There will be a lot of attention in the third quarter of the draw for the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace over Christmas as it is the part of the draw where the defending champion Peter Wright is housed.

He will be the emphatic favourite to make it through to the semi-final but there are a lot of big names in the 24 player field in this section, which not only makes for a pretty competitive market but also provides plenty of tests for the Scot.

Draw

(2) Peter Wright v Steve West/Amit Gilitwala

(31) Gabriel Clemens v Andy Hamilton/Nico Kurz

(15) Krzysztof Ratajski v Ryan Joyce/Karel Sedlacek

(18) Simon Whitlock v Darius Labanauskas/Chengan Liu

(7) James Wade v Callan Rydz/James Bailey

(26) Stephen Bunting v Andy Boulton/Deta Hedman

(10) Ian White v Kim Huybrechts/Di Zhuang

(23) Jeffrey de Zwaan v Ryan Searle/Danny Lauby

Preview

Clearly Peter Wright is the standout name in the red section of this quarter but you would be doing a lot of players a disservice if you assume that Wright will automatically make it through to the quarter final. Gabriel Clemens is certainly a threat to his chances and if you write off Krzysztof Ratajski and Simon Whitlock you would be taking something of a risk. Of the qualifiers, Andy Hamilton is a former finalist of this event while Ryan Joyce and Darius Labanauskas have both made the last eight of this tournament in recent years.

The green section might actually be one of the easier ones to predict as there isn’t a whole lot of players who are in great form and with the quality of the qualifiers it would not be a surprise to see a few seeds depart in the second round. James Wade is our outright pick so obviously we are hoping he is the man to come out of this quarter but those looking to stop him include Stephen Bunting, Ian White and Jeffrey de Zwaan while the likes of Ryan Searle and Kim Huybrechts who are on the fringes of the top 32 can make big moves in this tournament.

Betting

I’m already on James Wade for the tournament so hopefully he does come out of this quarter but I’m happy to use this market to attempt to find some value from the red section with which to take him on with in the hope that the player in question meets Wade in the quarter final where we would either get a winner or Wade progressing to a win from a payout. Clearly Wright is the one to beat in the red section but defending champions don’t have the greatest record in this tournament.

There are a few challengers in the red section to be fair with Gabriel Clemens very much a danger but the form of Krzysztof Ratajski has just tailed off enough to pass him over. I don’t trust Simon Whitlock and his finishing so I’m looking to take an outsider in that little section. This is a big tournament for Ryan Joyce who is defending £50,000 having made the quarter final here two years ago so he needs to get somewhere near there to protect his world ranking. In that run to the quarter final two years ago Joyce took care of Simon Whitlock and James Wade before running into eventual winner Michael van Gerwen. This year he has won a floor tournament and is renowned for his finishing. I’ll pay to see if he can cause some damage in that red half at 50/1.
