2021 Premier League Darts – Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

The Premier League Darts season concludes on Friday night when the semi-finals and the final are played out inside the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes on an evening where we will find out the successor to Glen Durrant as the champion.

The race for the top four has been significant all season and now it is all about winning two matches to claim the title. The four men are all top class so we should be in for a great night of darts, one which sadly time restrictions will deny us the chance to preview the final. Our outright pick Jonny Clayton has made it through so hopefully he can get into the final and give us some interest. We can however get stuck into both semi-finals.

Michael van Gerwen vs Jonny Clayton

The opening semi-final sees the perennial tournament winner Michael van Gerwen taking on the man who only secured his place in the last four when he came out on top in his match in the final night of the regular season.

Van Gerwen went through the early stages of the league phase offering up inconsistent performances but he won his last three matches to secure top spot. He has beaten three good players, the latter two who were in good form at the time so he is ready to launch a successful challenge for the title, especially now the format is up to the best of 19 legs. Clayton will be buoyed himself though having come through what was effectively a knockout encounter against Dimitri Van den Bergh on Thursday and to do it with a near 104 average and not lose his throw at all was absolutely to his credit. A repeat of that could see him go very close here and if I wasn’t already effectively on him at 4/1 here courtesy of my outright interest I might well have had a dabble on the Welshman. As I am technically on him at that price I’ll leave this one alone.

Jose de Sousa vs Nathan Aspinall

The second semi-final sees the other debutant to make it through to finals night in Jose de Sousa taking on a man who made it all the way to the final on his debut last year in Nathan Aspinall in a repeat of their match on Thursday evening.

De Sousa won that match 8-3 and if you think back to their other meeting in the league phase although it ended 6-6, the Portuguese star threw 11 180s at Aspinall in what was something of an unbelievable display. Aspinall has the edge in terms of final night experience here but he has only been there once so it isn’t like he has oceans of it himself. My big concern with Aspinall is that all this week he has struggled to finish matches off and if this gets tight, and you suspect it might, then that might go against him. If it doesn’t go tight that can only be because the de Sousa scoring power has allowed him to power away from ‘The Asp’.

I like de Sousa in this match. He has the throw in it and generally in his matches the longer they go on the better he scores and the harder he is to stop. Aspinall will dig in and he’ll scrap for all he’s worth but he doesn’t quite have that scoring burst de Sousa has and if he misses a few doubles on top of that like he did on Thursday he might not be able to reel the Grand Slam champion back in. I’ll take Jose to come through here.
