2021 Royal London One Day Cup – Durham vs Surrey Tips and Betting Preview

Glamorgan find out their opponents in the Royal London One Day Cup final on Tuesday when Durham play host to Surrey at the Riverside in the second semi-final with the winners moving on to Trent Bridge to play for the title on Thursday.

These two sides have impressed throughout the competition but have both hit form in the latter part of the group action so we should be in for a high quality contest with so much at stake for both counties. Unfortunately The Hundred is still taking up the TV action so we are off to the Durham live stream to watch the match.

Durham

It almost goes without saying that this is a huge occasion for Durham. Their off field issues have been documented all over the place over the last five years but if they can win this match and get to the final, then whatever people think about the competition, it will represent a sign that their recovery is nearing completion. Durham are no strangers to winning the 50 over competition. They have won it in 2007 and 2014 so mathematicians won’t need telling they are due to win it this year too!

Durham have built their success in this competition around their batting which has been exceptional for the most part. The only match Durham have lost in the tournament this season was when they posted 335 but ran into Gloucestershire’s power at the back end of the innings. If there is a concern over Durham it would be whether their bowling is good enough should Chris Rushworth have a bad day but this is a side who have won their last four matches very convincingly.

Surrey

I guess you could say this is just as big for Surrey too. They are a county who are used to competing for trophies and should be winning them and this is their final chance this season to win one. If they were to win this trophy then you can only admire the achievement because they would have done it with so many senior players away either with England or in The Hundred, or just missing out through injury. That still hasn’t stopped them making it this far.

Surrey’s bowling has really come to the boil in the last few matches and although that has left them chasing some par scores and some below par scores, they have been catapulted to them with the brutality that Tim David has been hitting the ball with. Those efforts were at The Oval though so it will be interesting to see if he, and they, can perform away from their home surroundings. If they can they will have every chance here.

Team News

Durham will be without the services of Paul van Meekeren for this semi-final after he randomly chose to leave immediately for the Caribbean Premier League. He is their leading wicket taker in the competition so his absence is a big blow.

Surrey have named the same squad that they had when they faced Gloucestershire in the quarter final. That means that Ollie Pope is once again expected to feature but there will be no Hashim Amla who remains out with injury.

Betting

I’m expecting a high scoring match here. There is absolutely nothing in the wicket for the bowlers these days up at the Riverside and these are two batting line ups in good form. Durham have posted 280 or more in five of their seven matches in the tournament so far and would have reached that total in another had they not reached their 226 target with nearly 10 overs to spare. They have the top two run scorers in the competition but have now lost their leading bowler.

Surrey have suddenly caught fire in the competition with the bat as well. Their last three efforts have been 269-3 from 39.4 overs, 219-2 from 37 overs and 246-5 from 42.4 overs so they were well on course for more than 300 in all of those matches. The run line for this match sits at 518.5 which based on those statistics doesn’t look nearly high enough. We saw a high scoring first match and given that Durham have only played two home matches here and there isn’t a team from The Hundred playing on this ground we should be on a fresh wicket. I expect this line to be covered.
