2021 Royal London One Day Cup – Essex vs Yorkshire Tips and Betting Preview

The knockout stages of the Royal London One Day Cup get underway on Saturday when the first of the two quarter finals takes place at Chelmsford as Essex host Yorkshire for the right to meet Glamorgan in the semi-final on Monday.

The Test match and The Hundred have the televised treatment to themselves but we can watch the whole match live on the live stream which will be provided by Essex either on all their social channels or on YouTube.

Essex

After winning the County Championship and the Vitality Blast in 2019 as well as the Bob Willis Trophy last season, Essex know that if they are to maintain their run of seasons with trophies they have to go all the way in this competition as they haven’t reached the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast or Division One of the County Championship. That will put some pressure on a side who are used to winning but they have shown their worth in this competition so far.

They won five of their eight group matches to finish second in Group A and secure a home quarter final. They have unearthed a couple of young gems in the tournament so far and when mixed around their senior players it is providing a good blend. Essex haven’t always delivered with the bat in this tournament so that is something they will need to ensure they provide the goods with from here on in if they are going to win the trophy.

Yorkshire

This has been very much a reserve Yorkshire side in this competition with so many players away either with England or competing in The Hundred. Despite so many being absent, they have finished third in Group B and will now fancy their chances of going further in the competition in what is the first of two quarter finals they have this month as they have also qualified for the last eight of the Vitality Blast. They are also in Division One in the County Championship so this has the makings of a special season at Headingley.

Yorkshire have been very good with the bat in this tournament despite being without so many of their seasoned batsmen. They haven’t always been as on it with the ball though so it might be that their best chance of winning is to chase a score here. Yorkshire haven’t really been known to be that competitive in the white ball disciplines so if they can get over the line here and push for the final it would be some achievement.

Team News

Essex will have the likes of Alastair Cook, Tom Westley, Ryan ten Doeschate and Simon Harmer in their squad for this match. They are joined by a couple of youngsters who have impressed in the competition so far in Aron Nijjar and Feroze Khushi.

Dom Bess was released from the England squad so he is available for Yorkshire in this match but there is no Duanne Olivier in the squad so Ben Coad and Steven Patterson are likely to lead the attack for the visitors.

Betting

You wouldn’t say that Essex have been completely convincing in this tournament but you have to think that now we are in the knockout stage of the competition experience is going to tell and with that in mind the home side have to be backed here. They have four international cricketers in their ranks in Alastair Cook, Tom Westley, Ryan ten Doeschate and Simon Harmer while the likes of Adam Wheater and Nick Browne are good county pros. Yorkshire are a very young side, especially with the bat.

Essex aren’t as strong with the ball but they have a lot of bowling options at their disposal and one of the big problems Yorkshire have had this season is depth to their batting. Just two players in the tournament have scored more than 200 runs and when you think that Yorkshire have played matches at Scarborough and other outgrounds that isn’t great. Essex only have two batsmen beyond 200 runs but both have over 300 for the tournament and Feroze Khushi is on 196 from three innings. I think Essex have the better batting and with the likes of Simon Harmer in their attack they have enough to get the job done here.
