2021 Royal London One Day Cup – Surrey vs Gloucestershire Tips and Betting Preview

The semi-final line up will be completed in the Royal London One Day Cup on Sunday when Surrey take on Gloucestershire in the second of the quarter finals at The Oval, with Durham awaiting the winners in the last four on Tuesday.

As with the first quarter final on Saturday, the Test match and The Hundred has the television coverage so we will be reduced to the Surrey live stream once again but it is one of the best of the lot so that probably isn’t an issue.

Surrey

There have been some good things and some not so good things from Surrey this season. When they have been good they have been very dominant in this tournament but when they have been off their best they have been found out in no uncertain terms. They have won their last two matches though and generally have a very strong record on their own ground, something they will hope to make the most of in this quarter final.

Surrey really stepped up with the ball in the second half of the group stage and then when the likes of Tim David caught fire with the bat it was always going to be hard to contain them. They need the bowlers to maintain the consistency and intensity for what they hope will be another three matches this week which would give them every chance of winning the competition, which would be a very good effort given all the players they have away with England and in The Hundred.

Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire only made it into the top three in Group A on the final day of the group phase but it was some effort to get there. They could be forgiven for thinking they were dead and buried after they lost their opening two matches but of the five they were able to play after that they won four and lost just the one, which was to Essex who have already made the semi-final this weekend so that was hardly a terrible result.

Gloucestershire have beaten Durham in this tournament when they chased down a miracle score so that sets the standard they can play at. In fact, after struggling in their first couple of matches with the bat, they have finished the group phase in fine form with the willow, scoring freely and most importantly their senior players are delivering the goods with the bat which is a must. They have lost bowlers to The Hundred but still have the sort of attack which could prosper here.

Team News

Surrey have a whole bunch of players who are away at The Hundred as well as Rory Burns and Sam Curran with England but Ollie Pope was released from the England squad and he will feature in this contest. Hashim Amla is out with a groin injury.

Gloucestershire have named the same squad to the one they picked from for the win over Kent. Chris Dent came good in that match which was important because Ben Charlesworth is still out. James Bracey is in the squad.

Betting

I didn’t see a fresh wicket prepared when watching The Hundred match on this ground on Saturday evening so I’m guessing this match will be played on a used wicket which might well bring Gloucestershire right into the game here. They have been masters of playing on pitches which keep a little low and suit spinners and medium pacers for going on 30 years now and nothing has changed in that regard so I wonder just how much home advantage Surrey will actually get here.

Surrey have done well to make it through to this stage with their last two wins propelled by the ferocious bat of Tim David but if he fails there aren’t too many others who have got runs in the last week or two. The good thing is that a number of their players are used to playing in big matches but the same can be said of Gloucestershire too. I think this is a pretty even match but the slower and lower conditions might just suit the visitors a little more than the hosts so I’ll take them at odds against.
