2021 The Open Championship Golf – Final Round Tips and Betting Preview

The last day of major championship golf for almost nine months takes place on Sunday when the final round of The Open Championship is played out at Royal St Georges and the champion golfer of the year is crowned.

This is always one of the highlights of the sporting calendar and we look set for a cracking final day of the competition with some of the best golfers in the world battling it out for the famous Claret Jug and the honour of being The Open champion.

Round 3 Recap

Louis Oosthuizen took a two shot lead into the third round of the tournament and although he saw that halved over the Saturday 18 holes he does still hold a one shot lead. It is still Collin Morikawa who is his closest challenger. Oosthuizen leads on 12 under with Morikawa 11 under. Jordan Spieth comes next on nine under with Corey Conners and Scottie Scheffler on eight under. They are the only men within five of the lead of the South African heading into Sunday.

Saturday was a day to forget for us betting wise. Dustin Johnson was absolutely terrible with the tucked away pins catching him out. The early holes did some real damage to him and he could never recover. Scottie Scheffler only shot one under himself but that was more than enough to ease past Johnson who was three over for his round. That leaves us with plenty to do on Sunday.

Sunday Betting

We have the outright market to go at on Sunday and the various finishing markets but the problem with the latter is there is no real wind forecast at any stage throughout the day so this isn’t a round where someone can go out early and post a number and then sit back as the wind gets up and watch everyone disappear past them. That also makes betting on the outright difficult too. My gut feeling tells me Oosthuizen doesn’t get it done but there isn’t a whole lot of evidence that he won’t other than the last two majors. If Collin Morikawa had more links experience it would be a no brainer but he doesn’t and that makes betting tough. I’ve done enough on the outright market this week so I’ll leave that alone and try to rescue some cash from the two balls.

Sunday 2 Balls

As with Saturday, the field go out in two balls on Sunday with the tee times moved back an hour and 20 minutes in case a play-off is needed later in the day. That means that the final two ball of Louis Oosthuizen and Collin Morikawa go out at 14.35 BST with the penultimate pairing of Jordan Spieth and Corey Conners out 10 minutes earlier. Once again the TV coverage is locked in for the opening tee shot of the day so we’ll get plenty of early group action on our screens. The pick of those include Joaquin Niemann and Xander Schauffele at 09.30 BST and Rory McIlroy and Sam Horsfield who go out at 11.05 BST. My bet comes from the middle of the afternoon.

Paul Casey vs Shane Lowry

Match tees off at 13.25 BST

At five under par, it remains to be seen whether Paul Casey and Shane Lowry believe they can still win the tournament when they go out alongside each other for the final round but you would think Lowry would be more motivated to finish off well regardless of how they rate their chances.

As the defending champion Lowry will want his final day as holder of the Claret Jug to be one he can look back on fondly and the suggestion is that he is playing well enough to conclude his tournament positively. He cut a frustrated figure after the third round after claiming he left a few shots on the golf course, also suggesting he hit it as well as he had done all year. I suspect there is a big final round in him whereas I’ve had the feeling all week that Casey has been holding on a touch and as the pins get harder he might be found wanting a little, especially if his motivation isn’t as high as he would like it to be. Lowry is probably the better links player of the two anyway and I’d have him more of a favourite than he is. I like the 11/10 that he comes out on top here.
