2021 World Championship Snooker Qualifying – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The World Championship qualifying tournament continues on Tuesday when another set of players start out on first round duty inside the English Institute of Sport on a day where the drama and tension is set to continue.

The hugely anticipated clash between Jimmy White and Stephen Hendry turned out to be a disappointing damp squib but hopefully the quality can improve with the likes of Ken Doherty and Jamie Clarke taking to the baize.

Morning Session

The former world champion Ken Doherty will headline the action in the morning session when he goes up against the Welsh veteran Lee Walker in a match which could have significant ramifications for whoever loses it. The other streamed match in the morning session sees the man who made it all the way to the Crucible last season in Jamie Clarke. He takes on the teenager from Ukraine in the form of Iulian Boiko for a place in the second round.

The other two matches in the morning session can be viewed with the bookmakers and they see the improving Si Jiahui taking on the amateur player Hamim Hussain. The other match sees two veterans of the tour going at it when Rod Lawler takes on Alex Borg in what is unlikely to be the easiest watch given the styles of the two men involved, not that whoever comes out on top will care an iota of course!

Afternoon Session

The main match in the afternoon session sees another player who went all the way through qualifying last season in Ashley Carty. He meets a player who should be entering this competition much deeper into the event in Michael White. The only match between two professionals in this afternoon session sees Igor Figueiredo taking on the lowly ranked Farakh Ajaib who could really do with a win here and the points that would provide him.

The other two matches in this session would see a couple of veterans in action on the outside tables when Peter Lines and Rory McLeod take to the battle to battle it out with a couple of amateur players. Lines has the largely unknown Mark Lloyd whereas McLeod has a more sterner test in the shape of the French player Brian Ochoiski, although even then you would expect the man who now represents Jamaica to come through.

Evening Session

We saw the first female player exit the tournament on Monday and on Tuesday evening the second one will look to fare better when Rebecca Kenna takes centre stage. Her match against Brandon Sargeant will be on the main table. The streamed table will offer up the chance to see Duane Jones, who badly needs to get winning matches this week, taking on the amateur Hayden Staniland who we saw at the Shootout a couple of months ago.

Two other matches take place in this evening session with Allan Taylor meeting Bai Langning in one of them. The winner of that will go up against the popular Alan McManus in the second round. Steven Hallworth hasn’t had the best season but he can make up for that if he can win a couple of matches this week. He takes on yet another amateur on show over the course of the day in the Scottish player Dean Young.

Betting

There isn’t a huge amount that I like over the course of the day on Tuesday but there is one that stands out to me. That comes in the main match in the afternoon session where Ashley Carty is taken to beat Michael White. I like White and have been a fan of his for a while but we know all about his issues with confidence and things like that. It is that reason why he isn’t on tour as a professional any more.

White can’t be carrying much confidence into this match having lost his last three first round matches in proper tournaments. The latest of those was at the Gibraltar Open where he lost to Sohail Vahedi and he was very poor in that match. Ashley Carty has really disappointed this season after the way last season ended with his run in the Championship League and making it to the Crucible but there is a suspicion that the longer matches bring the best out of him. I say that because in the European Masters he made the last 32 and then in the UK Championship he beat Ali Carter in the first match. He also won his opener in German Masters qualifying before running into Ding who you wouldn’t expect him to beat. If that trend continues here the Yorkshireman might just pull off what would be an upset in terms of the odds, if not the rankings.
