2022 German Masters Snooker Qualifying – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The qualifying competition for the German Masters continues on Tuesday when we have two sessions of first round matches as well as a session of second round action on a day where the first four places at the Tempodrom in Berlin will be filled.

The eight winners from Monday get to play for the spot in the main draw on Tuesday afternoon, while the morning and evening sessions sees the first round of the competition continuing across the four tables.

Morning Session

The former winner of this tournament Mark Williams is the headline attraction in the morning session on Tuesday. He will be playing his first round match on one of the main tables when he takes on an Oliver Lines who is having a great season so far in one of the pick of the matches in this first round. The other leading name on show in this session is Zhao Xintong. The Chinese youngster will be looking to move to within a win of making it to Berlin when he takes on Stuart Carrington.

There are a couple of other Chinese youngsters on show on the tables which can be watched with certain bookmakers. Chang Bingyu is tipped to have a big future and he’ll be looking to make progress when he takes on Peter Lines in the better of the two matches. Pang Junxu is another one of whom a number of judges speak highly of. He will go up against one of the amateurs who have been invited into the tournament in Dean Young.

Afternoon Session

This is where the first four spots in the main draw will be filled when the winners from the action on Monday will compete over the four tables. Stephen Maguire is the leading name of the eight on show and he can book a trip to the Tempodrom if he gets the better of Yuan Sijun who was in good form on Monday. Anthony McGill is the next leading light on show. The Scot picked up a first meaningful win of the season on Monday and will be looking to back that up against Jamie O’Neill on Tuesday.

Zhou Yuelong is a player who many believe will win a tournament this year and if he is to have the chance to do it at the German Masters then he needs to overcome the challenge of Zak Surety. The other match sees two men who had to come through a deciding frame in the first round meeting when Allan Taylor takes on the former semi-finalist in this tournament in Tom Ford who will be looking to make up for having to miss the Northern Ireland Open last week.

Evening Session

It is all about the Wilsons on the main tables on Tuesday evening when we go back to first round action. Kyren Wilson is a former winner of this tournament so he will be extremely keen to get back to the Tempodrom. To get halfway there he is going to need to beat Xu Si while over on the other main table his namesake Gary Wilson will be looking to progress once again. He meets Ian Burns looking to continue his good start to the season having already made the British Open final.

Jimmy Robertson is another player who has come out of the traps on fire this season and he is in action on Tuesday evening too. He will be looking to build on his run to the semi-final of the British Open and last 16 in Belfast last week when he plays Martin O’Donnell. The other match sees the youngster Iulian Boiko looking for a rare win on the season. In order to get it he will need to overcome the challenge of Li Hang.

Betting

I’m a big fan in these qualifying events of taking form players or players who have the more fluent game and Jimmy Robertson certainly ticks that box. He made the semi-final of the British Open earlier in the season and looked in good order in the Northern Ireland Open last week and probably should have beaten Judd Trump in the last 16. He faces Martin O’Donnell who hasn’t really offered much in the way of great form for a while and although he ran into Ricky Walden on fire last week, I saw that match and O’Donnell just didn’t cut the figure of a man who is feeling good about his game right now.

Robertson looks like he has had a new lease of life after almost falling off the tour at the end of last season. Whether that is because crowds are back or how close he came to losing his professional status I’m not sure, but we are finally seeing the man who won the European Masters a few years ago. We’re definitely not seeing the best version of O’Donnell at the minute and I’ve got to believe that will allow Robertson to win this and cover a 1.5 frame handicap in the process.
