2022 Irish 1000 Guineas – Big Race Tips and Betting Preview

After the men got the Irish classics season underway on Saturday, it is the turn of the fillies to take centre stage on Sunday when the Irish 1000 Guineas is raced at the Curragh on a day where we should get plenty of clues about the remainder of the season.

Unlike the 2000 version of the race on Saturday, there is a deeper field and a much more open feel to the race. We’re opposing the very top of the market and looking deeper at a value selection against the favourite.

The highlight of the day is the Irish 1000 Guineas where a much bigger field has assembled than what we saw in the Irish 2000 Guineas, with 14 going to post.  Many of these have raced against each other so it’s not an easy puzzle to solve & that suggests we should be looking for a bit of each way value.  The current favourite is the 1st of 4 Aiden O’Brien runners & that comes in the shape of Tuesday who was 3rd behind Cachet in the English 1000.  She’s lightly raced & open to improvement but isn’t for me.  Homeless Songs won on reappearance winning a trial at Leopardstown & looked impressive in the way she quickened but I’m not convinced she wanted an extra furlong.  Purplepay was campaigned in France last year & is having her first run for William Haggas & her first run of the season, but she almost certainly needs softer ground.  Mise En Scene was a late non runner in the English 1000 but is another that is having her first run of the year so she may just need this.  Of the others, Villanova Queen could run a big race if she can get a good early position from her wide draw.

Betting

However, I cannot get past Agartha.  She is the most experienced of this field having seen the racetrack 10 times to date but she seems to love her racing.  Last year, she won a Group 3 at Leopardstown beating the decent Juncture before improving to win a Group 2 here with the likes of Discoveries & Concert Hall behind.  Stepped up to Group 1 company in the Moyglare, she only gave way to Discoveries but easily had the beating for Homeless Songs who is much shorter in the betting here.  This year, she’s twice finished 2nd in trials, first behind Homeless Songs when she stuck on well & looked like she’d be the one most suited by an extra furlong & then was behind History where she had a nightmare passage in the first 2 furlongs.  Given she had to give 3lbs to the winners but today reopposes off level weights, I don’t really understand why she’s bigger in the market than both of them.  She likes to go from the front but doesn’t need to lead so irrespective of the early pace, she should not be inconvenienced.  At double figure odds, I think she has an outstanding each way chance.
