It is do or die time for the St Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League on Tuesday evening, when they play host to the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the latest outing at the Darren Sammy Stadium in a big match for both teams.
The Zouks dropped to the bottom of the table on Monday night when Jamaica saw off Barbados but can move into fourth with a win here. St Kitts and Nevis will become the second side guaranteed a play-off spot if they come out on top here.
St Lucia Zouks
It has started going very wrong for the St Lucia Zouks. To be fair their season has never really got off the ground but at least in the early stages they were away from home so they were getting some slack. That is disappearing now though. On a wonderful batting wicket in their first match here they got rolled over for 101 by the Barbados Tridents and they were second favourites against Trinbago in their last match when the rain came.
The batting was a real concern heading into the season, and although they have reinforced that area personnel wise, they just can’t seem to put partnerships together and as a result they are not putting big totals on the board. Some of their dismissals have been horrible too which is never a good thing. On the bright side they have bowled well in the main so there is hope for them if they can sort out their batting exploits.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots
It has been an up and down campaign for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots but they did take advantage of their home leg in the tournament enough to have their destiny in their own hands. A win here moves them into the play-offs and with only one regular season game left after this, the Patriots will be nicely rested for the postseason too should they get there. That might yet be relevant given the condensed nature of this competition.
As the tournament has gone on the Patriots have got a lot better with the ball and that has been a difference maker. They have also batted smarter too with key men all finding form at the right time, and with it all coming together nicely, St Kitts and Nevis should be taken seriously here. There is a lot of experience in their side which is important as well. The Patriots should be feeling pretty good about their game right now.
Team News
Colin Ingram hit form for the St Lucia Zouks last time out and they’ll need him to go well here. Obed McCoy missed the last match through injury. It is unclear whether he is fit for this one but if he is it would be a surprise if he doesn’t go straight back in.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots are on something of a roll right now so they may choose to go in with an unchanged line up. It will be interesting to see if they persist with Devon Thomas opening the batting as that plan has gone a little stale.
Betting
This is a big game for both sides but I think the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots are better equipped to deal with the danger posed by the opposition here. The Patriots bat a long way down and they have a number of bowling options who are suddenly in excellent form, with the bowling of Mohammad Hafeez giving Carlos Brathwaite so many more plans later in the innings which is working a treat.
I always like a side who get into a bit of bother early doors but then come out of it the right side and go on and win a match and that is what the Patriots did last time out. We’ve not really seen the St Lucia Zouks do that just yet. Too many of their batsmen aren’t delivering the goods and they are flattering to deceive with the ball at present, albeit on a good batting track. I expect the Patriots to win this one.
