Australian Open Tennis 2022 – Day 10 Tips and Betting Preview

The quarter finals of the Australian Open conclude on another really good looking day of action on the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Wednesday after which we will know the semi-final line up for the two singles draws.

The first day of quarter final action offered up a couple of five-setters in the men’s draw and it would be no surprise if this one was to deliver similar. The two women’s quarter finals look full of competitiveness as well so we should be in for a great day of tennis to enjoy.

Day Session

Danielle Collins vs Alize Cornet

The action begins with two surprise packages if you can call them that meeting when Danielle Collins looks to reach the last four of this tournament for the second time when she takes on the unseeded Alize Cornet who is having the fortnight of her life to date.

These two women have been excellent to watch in this tournament so far. Not only have they played some wonderful tennis at times but they have fought extremely hard and shown us exactly what this event means to the pair of them. That makes me think that both of them are going to compete very hard here. Cornet has seen off Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep en route to this quarter final while Collins has overcome the challenge of Elise Mertens in the previous round. Both ladies have been to three sets in their last two wins and the way they are battling I expect similar here. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this goes to three sets or two very close sets so I like over 20.5 games in this one.

Iga Swiatek vs Kaia Kanepi

The last of the quarter finals in the women’s draw sees the former French Open winner Iga Swiatek taking on the veteran giant-killer Kaia Kanepi, who will be looking to reach the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time.

The Estonian ace has done marvellously well to make it to this stage of the tournament, outlasting Aryna Sabalenka in an absolute classic in the previous round having also taken out the former champion Angelique Kerber prior to that. Swiatek has been largely untroubled in this event. She dropped her first set in the previous round against a Sorana Cirstea who was able to swing with freedom. From a set down the Polish star was excellent in that match and if she can dictate terms early here I think she’ll have enough to win this but Kanepi can hang tough so this isn’t a match I’m particularly eager to bet on.

Jannik Sinner vs Stefanos Tsitsipas

After the two women’s quarter finals have come and gone it is all about the men for the remainder of the day with the Italian superstar in waiting Jannik Sinner up first against the Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas in what looks like a belting last eight clash.

Tsitsipas has been beyond this stage here before and of course had that major breakthrough at the French Open last year when he made the final there. All the talk coming in was of him having to nurse an elbow injury but if he is in pain with it then it isn’t showing. He has been exemplary so far and even when he got stuck in a titanic tussle with Taylor Fritz in the last round his class got him through. Sinner has reached this quarter final with the loss of just the one set but he is yet to face anyone in the top 40 in the world rankings yet. In my eyes Sinner is the favourite for this one on reputation alone because it is Tsitsipas who has achieved more in his career to date. That doesn’t mean I’d be surprised if the Italian comes through here. He’s clearly a star in waiting so I’m happy to sit back and enjoy what should be something of a crackerjack match rather than bet on it.

Night Session

Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Daniil Medvedev

That all leaves us with the one match in the night session which is the last of the quarter finals in the competition as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Daniil Medvedev in what is a rerun of the semi-final of the US Open from last year.

Medvedev won that encounter in straight sets but anyone who watched that match will know it was a whole lot closer than that. They then met in the ATP Cup earlier this year which was a much more one-sided game and I wonder with the relentless amount of tennis that the Canadian has played in this tournament whether this will follow the path of that most recent meeting rather than that US Open showdown. Three times in this tournament FAA has been on court over 3.5 hours and while Medvedev touched that mark for the first time in the last 16, the points against the serve and volleying style of Maxime Cressy were not as brutal as usual so he should be much the fresher of the two men here. I think if Medvedev wins the first set he could run out a cosy winner here.
