The second round of the Aegon Championships will conclude on Thursday, weather permitting, when the final six matches of the round get played over the various courts at Queens and hopefully by the end of the day we will be left with our quarter final line up.
The pick of the matches on Thursday is the all-British clash between Andy Murray and Aljaz Bedene but there are some other decent names on show in what should be another good day of tennis at the London venue.
Wednesday Recap
It was another excellent day for our bets on Wednesday as the two picks that were suggested both won. Kyle Edmund actually won his match against Gilles Simon so the 3.5 game handicap sailed in and then later in the afternoon Steve Johnson came from a set down to Adrian Mannarino and turned him over. That is now a staggering six winners from six for us in the Aegon Championships.
Away from our bets Milos Raonic got it done against Nick Kyrgios in the match that was held over from Tuesday while our outright pick John Isner powered past Juan Martin del Potro and in the first of the second round matches Marin Cilic comfortably disposed of Janko Tipsarevic.
Thursday – Centre Court
Kyle Edmund opens up proceedings on Centre Court again on Thursday and he faces French opposition for a second day in a row. This time Paul-Henri Mathieu is his opponent. The French player is playing his second Briton in successive days too so that will be a weird one.
After that comes the all-British clash before Milos Raonic and his super coach John McEnroe look to make the quarter finals when they come up against the lucky loser Jiri Vesely. The action rounds off with the Roberto Bautista-Agut against Donald Young match.
I am siding with Edmund again here. I thought he was pretty good against Simon and handled himself nicely in that final set. Mathieu struggled to come past Dan Evans in the first round and I rate Edmund as significantly better than Evans and while this is another one that might go the distance on this surface and with the crowd behind him I’m firmly behind the Brit here.
The only other bet I’m interested is in the Raonic match where an opening set tie-break is far too big at 13/8. Their only previous meeting went the distance in the first set before Raonic took control and we know Vesely is serving well because he’s had five tie-breaks this week already. Raonic went to a decider in the first set against Kyrgios and in a match dominated by serve I can’t believe there isn’t a significant chance of a tie-break being needed to decide the opening stanza of this one.
Thursday – Outside Courts
Just the two singles matches take place on the outside courts on Thursday but if you have a ground pass then you’ll still be seeing some good tennis as John Isner takes on Gilles Muller before Fernando Verdasco faces Bernard Tomic.
I can’t really get a feel for how the Verdasco/Tomic match will go but I am more confident with the Isner game and the bet I like there is for Isner to take the first set but in a tie-break.
You’ve got to think this serve dominated match up won’t have many breaks of serve. These two have played 11 sets against each other in the past and seven of them have gone to a breaker. This one is likely to as well but just based on the first round Isner looked to be serving the better of the two. Muller could be a bit jaded after last week so I’ll go with the American to steal the first set on the tie break.
