Aegon Championships – Day 5 Betting Preview

It is quarter final day at the Aegon Championships on Friday although the second round has to conclude before the last eight matches can begin. The weather continued to disrupt the tournament on Thursday and as such the final last 16 match couldn’t be completed which means someone will have to play twice on Friday.

Thursday Recap

We were brought back down to earth from a betting point of view on Thursday. Our main bet on Kyle Edmund was voided because Paul-Henri Mathieu pulled out with an injury and our two tie break bets agonisingly lost.

John Isner’s match with Gilles Muller saw two tie breaks but not in the set we wanted one in and Milos Raonic broke serve to win the first set 7-5 when we were destined for a tie break in that one so that was all more than a little frustrating.

Away from our bets there were wins for Bernard Tomic and Andy Murray on Thursday and they eased into the quarter finals where they will play Gilles Muller and Kyle Edmund respectively should the weather cooperate.

Steve Johnson vs Marin Cilic

The first of the three quarter finals which have been determined so far sees the two men who won through on Wednesday in action. Steve Johnson has come through nicely in this tournament but not as well as Marin Cilic and it is no surprise that the former US Open champion is the favourite here.

I make him the favourite as well and I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes through here with plenty in hand but I respect Johnson enough not to take him on when there is no need to.

Andy Murray vs Kyle Edmund

The all-British quarter final is second on the show court on Friday. This will be the first time they have met in official competition but Edmund did beat Murray in an exhibition event at the end of 2015 so I wouldn’t think he would fear his Davis Cup teammate.

Edmund +5.5 games tempted me but I’d rather have a game more on our side. I do think Edmund will be competitive in the early stages of the match but if it goes long Murray could come through a one sided set somewhere which is enough to put me off that.

Gilles Muller vs Bernard Tomic

This is the match of the day that interests me from a betting point of view where I’m happy to get on the big serving Gilles Muller. Muller is a great run of form at the minute. He made the final last week and he’s come through so far this week too and he enjoys a 3-0 head to head lead over the Australian as well.

We are yet to see Tomic really tested this week even though he had to go three sets on Thursday. He always seemed to have the upper hand and came through quite nicely in the end. Muller had to save a ridiculous 10 match points against Isner but the fact he saved them shows how well he is serving and how good his nerve is under ultimate pressure. At even money he’s the call for me here.

Tips

Back G.Muller to beat B.Tomic for a 4/10 stake at 2.00 with Betfred
