Africa Cup of Nations 2021 – Saturday 29th January Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The quarter finals begin at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament on Saturday when four sides battle it out for spots in the semi-final of what is fast becoming a wide open competition after the big names continue to flatter to deceive.

Among the teams on show on Saturday are the host nation Cameroon and the North African powerhouse of Tunisia. They will be expected to make it into the last four but two sides have little to lose and will be looking to cause an upset.

Gambia vs Cameroon (16.00 – BBC 2 & Sky Premier League)

The opening quarter final is the one all in the host nation Cameroon will be interested in as their side look to continue to progress at their own party when they take on the shock team of the competition so far in Gambia.

Gambia went into the tournament as the lowest ranked side in the competition but they have rubbished the rankings by claiming seven points from nine in what looks the best of the groups in the first stage before shocking Guinea in the last 16. I think it is fair to say they will have to go up a level here but that is only if Cameroon play to their potential. Cameroon have been hit and miss so far in this tournament. They also picked up seven points from nine in the group and although they saw off Comoros in the last 16 there was little that was convincing about it, although to be fair it is sometimes hard to impress in a match you are expected to win with ease. They got the job done though and that means there is still time to improve. I’m expecting to see the real Cameroon at some point and if it is here then they’ll justify the short odds. If it isn’t then this could be a real spectacle. Either way I’m happy to leave it alone.

Burkina Faso vs Tunisia (19.00 – Sky Premier League)

The second quarter final on Saturday sees Burkina Faso going up against a Tunisia side who have defied expectation a little in this competition but who are now favourites to reach the last four of the Africa Cup of Nations once again.

Burkina Faso have lived a bit of a charmed life in this tournament but survived a penalty shootout in the last 16 to book their spot in this quarter final. I haven’t been terribly impressed with them at any stage of this competition. I have however been impressed with how Tunisia have bounced back from the disappointment of the controversy of that opening game for them when the ref blew for full time early. Although they lost their final group game after that to Gambia, they knew they were through by then. Their win over Nigeria in the last 16 shows us what this team are made of and having done that despite a Covid outbreak in their camp, which is understood to have cleared up for this game, there should be even more to come from Wahbi Khazri and co. If this is settled inside 90 minutes I think it will be Tunisia who are progressing rather than a limited Burkina Faso side.
