The second day of the BNP Paribas Open sees the first round of the tournament conclude on Thursday as the ATP Indian Wells event heads towards the stage where the seeded players enter the opening Masters 1000 event of the year.
We saw some good competitive tennis on the opening day on Wednesday with spots against a seed in the second round on the line and it would be foolish to think that we are going to get anything different across the Thursday action.
Stadium 1
We only have two matches on the main stadium from the men’s draw and they open up both of the sessions but while we might be short of action, there is nothing to suggest we will be short of quality. We have the rising British star Jacob Fearnley and the biggest young star in the game right now in Joao Fonseca opening up the action and then when the night session comes along we will see the return of Nick Kyrgios. He goes up against Botic van de Zandschulp with the winner setting up a clash with Novak Djokovic in the next round.
Stadium 2
That means that we have three matches from the ATP draw over on Stadium 2 on Thursday but we need to wait for a women’s match to conclude before the first of them. When the men do come along then the Acapulco finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina goes up against the home wildcard Mackenzie McDonald. The day session concludes on this part of the ground with the pick of the first round matches between Jan-Lennard Struff and Gael Monfils. The other men’s match comes in the night session where the exciting home player Learner Tien meets Mariano Navone.

Stadium 3
There is plenty of men’s action over on Stadium 3 on Thursday and it gets underway with what should be another decent match between Benjamin Bonzi and the home player Jenson Brooksby. When they are done Zhizhen Zhang and Gabriel Diallo will be back on court to conclude the final set of their match which was pulled off on Wednesday. Two more men’s matches follow them with Matteo Arnaldi the next player looking to make it through when he faces Aleksandar Kovacevic before we conclude with yet another decent game on paper when David Goffin goes up against Lorenzo Sonego.
Best of the Rest
There is plenty of men’s action dotted around the remainder of the grounds on Thursday with Luciano Darderi and Hugo Gaston among the players who will be competing out on Stadium 4 while there is a full slate of action over on Stadium 5 which sees the likes of Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Sebastian Baez, Rinky Hijikata, Pablo Carreno Busta and Arthur Rinderknech among the players looking to win through and set up a clash with a seeded player later in the week.
Betting
As was the case on Wednesday, I’m largely going to ease my way through this opening round while we get to grips with exactly how these new courts in Indian Wells are playing but there is one bet which stands out to me and that is the 4/5 on Lorenzo Sonego to beat David Goffin. Goffin won a couple of matches in Acapulco but they are the only two wins in eight matches for the Belgian this season and I just think he is vulnerable here.
Sonego has lost four of his last five matches but the first of those was the quarter final of the Australian Open where he had already taken care of the likes of Stan Wawrinka and Joao Fonseca and while he has lost those four games the men who beat him were Ben Shelton, Holger Rune, Ugo Humbert and Stefanos Tsitsipas – four players in the top 20 in the world. Goffin is performing nothing like to that level and however the courts are playing I think the Italian has the Belgian covered here.
Tips
Back L.Sonego to beat D.Goffin for a 3/10 stake at 1.80 with Betway
