ATP Miami Open Tennis 2022 – Day 5 Tips and Betting Preview

The third round begins at the ATP Miami Open on Sunday which means that for the first time in Florida this week we can have seeded players facing each other on the day where the quality of the tournament comes to the fore.

It is the turn of the bottom half of the draw to play down to the final 16 stage on Sunday which means we get to see the likes of Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner and Frances Tiafoe among others on the show courts.

Stadium

There are three matches on the Stadium court over the course of the play on Sunday. We have to wait a while for them to come along though because the women get the day underway. When we start with the men we do so with a crackerjack of a clash between two of the most unpredictable players in the draw in Nick Kyrgios and Fabio Fognini. Once their shenanigans are over the American ace Frances Tiafoe will look to make it through when he faces off against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The other men’s match comes in the night session as Alexander Zverev looks to make it into the last 16 when he meets Mackenzie McDonald.

Grandstand

We have just the two men’s matches on the Grandstand court on Sunday evening and all eyes will be on this court if you are from a British persuasion as Cameron Norrie will open the show. He takes on the unseeded Hugo Gaston who downed John Isner in the previous round. We have to wait until the final match of the night for the other men’s match with the entertaining Gael Monfils walks onto court to face Francisco Cerundolo for a spot in the last 16 of another Masters 1000 event.

Butch Buchholz Court

The other three men’s matches come over on the Butch Buchholz Court but we don’t get started until after a doubles match has taken place. When we do begin Casper Ruud will be on show when he takes on Alexander Bublik. A women’s match follows that before we get to the final two men’s matches on this court. The first of those sees Jannik Sinner taking on Pablo Carreno Busta before two qualifiers clash when Thanasi Kokkinakis takes on the man who won the Challenger event in Phoenix last weekend in Denis Kudla.

Betting

After three winners from four bets over the course of the week so far I’ll go with one throughout the day on Sunday and that comes in the clash between the two qualifiers Thanasi Kokkinakis and Denis Kudla, both of whom have a huge opportunity to go deep in this tournament not just because they face each other for a place in the last 16 but also the winner will face Mackenzie McDonald or an out of sorts Alexander Zverev for a quarter final spot.

That makes me think this match will be pretty close. Admittedly Kudla looked to be coming to the end of his energy reserves when he closed out his win over Lorenzo Sonego in the previous round but Kokkinakis had to go for more than three hours in seeing off Diego Schwartzman so he isn’t exactly fresh as a daisy either and his injuries through the years means he isn’t guaranteed to back that up here. Kudla arrives here with the confidence of winning the tournament in Phoenix last week and has won four more matches in Miami. He’ll be roared on by a decent crowd on this court and if he doesn’t extend his 2-0 head to head advantage over the Australian, I fancy he can stay close to him at the very least.

Tips

Back D.Kudla (+3.5 games) to beat T.Kokkinakis for a 3/10 stake at 2.00 with Boylesports
