Australian Open Tennis 2022 – Day 8 Tips and Betting Preview

The confirmed line up for the quarter finals of the Australian Open will be completed over the course of play on Monday when those who were not in action on Sunday take to the main courts around the grounds at Melbourne Park.

This tournament is bubbling along nicely and the incentive for winning on Monday is being just three wins away from picking up the opening Grand Slam title of the season. Both singles draws look wide open which is perfect for us neutrals watching on.

Rod Laver Arena

Two underrated players open up the action on the Rod Laver Arena on Monday when the super solid Elise Mertens meets the determined Danielle Collins in a potential cracker before the former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep takes to the main court once again. She meets the unseeded Alize Cornet who is having a good run this week. The day session is rounded off with the men’s match which is the one all the home fans will be interested in when their star man Alex de Minaur goes up against the Italian superstar Jannik Sinner.

The night session starts out with the men on show and we should be in for quite some contest when Taylor Fritz bids for a place in the quarter final of a major for the first time in his career. He takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas who has managed his way through the early rounds well enough. Once they are done the final match on the main court on Monday sees the number two seed Aryna Sabalenka taking on the veteran Kaia Kanepi.

Margaret Court Arena

As was the case on Sunday, there is just the two singles matches on the Margaret Court Arena on Monday. The schedule begins with a couple of doubles matches before the men take to the stage to finish off the day session. That match sees the serve and volley exploits of Maxime Cressy taking on the tournament favourite Daniil Medvedev. The other match comes in the night session where the former French Open champion Iga Swiatek goes for a place in another Grand Slam quarter final when she meets the giant-killer Sorana Kirstea.

John Cain Arena

That leaves one match over on the John Cain Arena and it is the latest match in the day session after a couple of doubles clashes take place. Marin Cilic has already won a Grand Slam at the US Open and he has been in the final of another and he’ll be eyeing up a place in the quarter final here after dumping Andrey Rublev out of the tournament in the previous round. He now meets another of the rising stars of the game in Felix Auger-Aliassime, who will be looking to reach the last eight of a second straight major after his run to the semis of the US Open.

Betting

Marin Cilic has a 3-0 head to head record against Felix Auger-Aliassime in their career and the former US Open champion looked to be hitting the ball lovely in his emphatic win over Andrey Rublev on Saturday so I’m a little surprised he is odds against to see off the Canadian. FAA is definitely a star in the making but consistency hasn’t always been his strong point and he has used up a fair amount of mental energy in getting to this stage with his first match lasting almost 3hr45 and his second one well over four hours.

I would imagine this will be a match where the serve dominates, although surprisingly in the seven sets they have played only the one has gone to a tiebreak. There might just be something about the FAA serve which Cilic gets a read on and if that is the case the Canadian could be in a bit of bother here. Cilic will know chances to go deep in a major are beginning to run out so he might want this a bit more than the younger man here and having had a smoother path to this stage he might have a bit more in reserve. He feels like the value to me.
