The opening round of the Australian Open will come to a close on Tuesday when those who are yet to get their main draw campaign underway will do so on a day where we have a pretty decent schedule out in Melbourne.
We’ve seen many of the main contenders come to the party and go through relatively unscathed in the opening round and on Tuesday it will be the turn of the likes of Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev and Jasmine Paolini to follow suit.
Rod Laver Arena
Two American players get the action underway on the main table when Emma Navarro gets her campaign started when she takes on Peyton Stearns in a great looking match. When they are done the man who was a win away from the title last year, Daniil Medvedev, will be back on the main court to open up his tournament when he takes on Kasidit Samrej. The night session is all about the Australian players with their number one male Alex de Minaur opening it up when he takes on Botic van de Zandschulp before Olivia Gadecki meets Veronika Kudermetova.
Margaret Court Arena
The exciting Holger Rune will open up the show over on the Margaret Court Arena on Tuesday. He takes on Zhizhen Zhang in what should be a decent match before the 2023 finalist Elena Rybakina starts her quest for another Grand Slam title when she meets the home wildcard Emerson Jones. The night session will open up with the French Open and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini facing the qualifier from China in the form of Sijia Wei before we finish the action with the match many are calling the pick of the first round ties in the men’s draw when Andrey Rublev takes on the recent Next Gen Finals winner Joao Fonseca.
John Cain Arena
We have a good day session over on the John Cain Arena to enjoy as well with Daria Kasatkina meeting Viktoriya Tomova to get it underway. When they are done two Americans will take to the court when Taylor Fritz looks to build on his run to the final of the US Open when he faces his compatriot Jenson Brooksby. Two more Americans open up what is being dubbed the twilight session on this court when the Adelaide winner Madison Keys meets Ann Li before the action on this court concludes with a match between Alexei Popyrin and Corentin Moutet.

Kia Arena
Two men who were once highly ranked but have fallen down the rankings and will be looking to begin the climb back up open up the show on the Kia Arena on Tuesday when Matteo Berrettini faces Cameron Norrie. When they are done Anna Kalinskaya faces the home qualifier Kimberley Birrell. Two Italian men then go onto court when Lorenzo Musetti faces Matteo Arnald in a really good looking game before the British number one Katie Boulter closes out the show when she goes up against Rebecca Marino.
Best of the Rest
We are still at the point in the tournament where there is a full schedule on the majority of the courts and that means that there are plenty of seeded players to watch for those who have a grounds pass or access to the various streams. They include Beatriz Haddad Maia, Hubert Hurkacz, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Ben Shelton, Maria Sakkari, Karen Khachanov, Yulia Putintseva, Francisco Cerundolo and Dayana Yastremska while Stan Wawrinka, Ons Jabeur and Denis Shapovalov are other household names on show.
Betting
There isn’t a huge amount that I like over the course of the day but there is one in each draw. In the men’s draw I’m happy to side with the man who almost won in Auckland last week in Zizou Bergs. He meets Facundo Diaz Acosta who also went fairly well in New Zealand last week, albeit as a lucky loser. Bergs made the final though and got a lot of tennis under his belt and while Diaz Acosta saw off Cameron Norrie and Sebastian Baez in the main draw, he was playing with the house money there which isn’t the case here. Those wins for Diaz Acosta came after a run of just one win in 12 on a hard court and I think he’s vulnerable here. The Belgian is a lot more accomplished on this surface and I think he wins this with a set to spare.
Moving into the women’s draw and I think the odds are the wrong way around between Taylor Townsend and Renata Zarazua. The Mexican is now the higher ranked player of the two and managed to get a couple of matches under her belt in Brisbane and another four in Hobart in the lead up to this event. Townsend is probably better on the doubles court than the singles one these days and this will be just her second singles match since the end of September so she might take a while to find her timing here. If she does then Zarazua could be away and gone by the time the American challenge hits full speed. I’ll take the Mexican as the outsider here.
Tips
Back Z.Bergs (-1.5 sets) to beat F.Diaz Acosta for a 3/10 stake at 1.91 with Coral
Back R.Zarazua to beat T.Townsend for a 3/10 stake at 2.10 with William Hill
