Australian Open Tennis 2025 Men’s Final – Jannik Sinner vs Alexander Zverev Tips and Betting Preview

The Australian Open draws to a close on Sunday when the men’s singles final concludes the opening Grand Slam of the year as the defending champion Jannik Sinner goes up against Alexander Zverev in what should be a tasty closer to the fortnight.

This final pits the top two players in the world rankings up against each other with Sinner looking to make a successful defence of the title and Zverev aiming to win a Grand Slam crown for the first time in his career.

Jannik Sinner

The world number one and defending champion Jannik Sinner has largely had a comfortable passage through the draw as he bids to become a repeat winner of the event. Sinner arrived under a bit of a cloud with his drug test failure back in the spotlight but as has been the case since it was revealed it hasn’t really put him off his stride this week. In fact, the only thing that threatened to derail him so far was an illness in the match against Holger Rune.

Sinner has cruised through the quarter final and the semi-final without dropping a set and we know he has what it takes to win the big match here. He was 2-0 down in the final a year ago and still came out on top so that will give him plenty of belief regardless of what happens in the early stages of this match. Sinner probably hasn’t shown his absolute best form in this tournament but we know what he can do if it is forced out of him.

Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev came here seeded to make the final after an excellent end to 2024 and to be fair to the German he has held up that side of the bargain. There is no doubt that he was helped by Novak Djokovic in this tournament. Not only did the Serb take out arguably the biggest danger to Zverev in Carlos Alcaraz but he then pulled out after just one set of their semi-final which should mean that Zverev is fresh as a daisy for this final given that he has only played one competitive set since Tuesday.

That doesn’t always equate to winning matches and this hasn’t exactly been an energy zapping week in terms of the temperatures and things with the exception of one day but it will at least mean that Zverev can have managed himself to peak in this final. Zverev is going to need to serve well if he is going to win this final and he will need to be aggressive too. Sometimes he can be guilty of holding back in the big matches but he needs to go at Sinner if he is going to win here.

Head-to-head

These two have had six battles in their past and it is Alexander Zverev who has come out on top in four of those matches. Jannik Sinner has won two including their last meeting which was an epic in Cincinnati last August. That was the only time that Sinner has beaten Zverev on a hard court. The German leads 3-1 on hard courts and he has won two of their three Grand Slam battles too, both of which were at the US Open. This will be the first time that they have played in a final of any kind and it will also be their first meeting in Australia.

Betting

The last three meetings between these two men have gone the distance and there have been plenty of close sets in among those matches too. The two matches prior to that had a tiebreak set so there is more than enough to think that we are in for a lengthy final here. Jannik Sinner isn’t going to give up his crown without a real fight while Alexander Zverev has probably his best chance for a Grand Slam here when you consider how little tennis he has played since Tuesday.

The game line for this one is 39.5 and if we get just one extended set then we would only need four sets for this line to be covered. There is every chance that we get those four sets when you consider how competitive matches between these two have been in the past and while there is a chance that Zverev wilts when the chance to win arrives, we should be way past 39 games before that moment comes along. We’re in for a cracking final here, one which can go beyond 39.5 games.
