Betfred Oaks 2025 – Big Race Tips and Betting Preview

We are now firmly into June and so a huge few weeks of racing begins on Friday when the third classic of the season, the Betfred Oaks, takes centre stage at Epsom Downs as the fillies go to post for one of the bigger races in the calendar.

The undercard on Friday is top drawer as you would expect for a meeting of this kind but our attention is going to be firmly on the big race itself. Nine go to post and we’re going double handed against the favourite.

4.00 Epsom Oaks

Preview

There’s just the 9 runners for the Oaks which is a bit of a disappointing turn out but it still doesn’t look the easiest race to solve.  The 3rd Classic of the season sees Desert Flower bidding to do the 1000 Guineas / Oaks double for Charlie Appleby & William Buick.  She’s 5 from 5 and the class act in the field by some distance but there are some stamina doubts so, at the price, she’s not one to have maximum faith.   Aiden O’Brien saddles 3 of the 9 and all of them have chances.  I’m less keen on Giselle, the Lingfield Oaks Trial winner, & would side with Whirl who scooted up in the Musidora but I’d have hoped for a slightly bigger price & the fact Ryan Moore deserts her for Minnie Hauk is offputting.

Betting

I appreciate it’s only a 9 strong field but I’m going each way of 2 selections.  The first of those is Elwateen.  This twice raced filly is unexposed but ran a huge race in the 1000 Guineas when beaten 2 lengths by Desert Flower.  She was weak in the betting that day but looked far from an outsider on the track, travelling well before just being tapped for toe.  She looks pretty straightforward and the way she finished off, looking strong through the lines, bodes very well for his step up in trip where a few come into it with stamina doubts.  I expect she will have come on a lot for his seasonal reappearance & she looks a knocking each way bet at the prices.

Talking of prices, I’d kick myself if I didn’t have a little on Qilin Queen.  Admittedly, she has quite a bit to find but I was impressed with the way she did it from the front at Newbury in a Listed race where she wound up the pace & had most of them off the bridle well over 2 furlongs out.   The field were closing at the line but I’m firmly of the opinion this longer trip will bring about further improvement.   She held off Revoir by a short head there but, strangely, is almost 4 times the price today and with her yard in absolutely sparkling form, I can’t resist a small each way play.

Tips

Back Elwateen (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 15.00 Coral (⅕ odds 1-3)

Back Qilin Queen (e/w) for a 0.5/10 stake at 34.00 William Hill (⅕ odds 1-3)
