Big Bash League 2017-18 – Hobart Hurricanes Team Guide & Betting Preview

The Hobart Hurricanes have gone three seasons without reaching the play-offs in the Big Bash League and that is something that they will be looking to change this season. In each of the last two years only one side has been worse than them so there is much improvement to be made in Tasmania if they are to be competitive. They have changed a lot of personnel in their bid to improve.

Taking wickets was a real issue for the Hobart Hurricanes last season. They took just 40 wickets in their eight matches and only two bowlers went for less than eight an over which is not really a winning combination so it is encouraging to see they have signed a couple of exciting overseas bowlers.

Generally the Hurricanes went well enough with the bat last season and they have strengthened in that area too in light of Tim Paine’s international call up which did threaten to hamper their chances. The Hurricanes hierarchy can expect a better season and with four of their first five at home it is imperative they get off to a good start.

Betting

I’ve already taken Darcy Short to be the top run scorer in the tournament so I’m not going to go in on the Hurricanes’ batting market for the season too but I do feel there is value to be had in the bowling market.

Not one bowler reached double figures for wickets in this Hobart side last season so it makes sense to focus on those who weren’t here for that tournament. That would be Tymal Mills and Jofra Archer where I think the value likes in the latter. You can never trust Mills to get through 10 matches in relatively short succession whereas Archer is likely to play most matches. He had a good summer for Sussex and given that nobody in Australia knows anything him he might have an advantage. At 5/1 he’s a decent price to lead the Hobart wicket taking this term.
