Big Bash League 2017-18 – Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers Betting Preview

Some Monday’s can be hard work as the working week begins but not this one as there is a double header in the Big Bash League to enjoy this time around. Three form sides and a former champion are in action on the day with the opening match coming from Blundstone Arena where the Hobart Hurricanes host the Sydney Sixers.

Hobart have won their last two matches and with games in hand a win here would have them nicely placed for the second half of the campaign. With five wins from five and four sides already on eight points the Sixers already know they are not making the semi-finals.

Hobart Hurricanes

It took the Hurricanes a couple of matches to find their stride this season but they have emphatically won their last two games and if they can make this a third win in a row then they will be getting confident of extending their season by qualifying for the semi-finals. Having been written off prior to the campaign that would be some achievement.

Hobart needed to put up more runs after their two defeats and courtesy of D’Arcy Short they have done exactly that. If there is a concern it is that only Short has put up big runs in the two wins and were he to fail at any point they might revert to type but on the flip side their bowling is coming on nicely.

Sydney Sixers

Many people were talking up the Sixers as the dark horses of the competition but injuries and so many players out of form has meant that their season has not got going. It could have been so different had they not let Sydney Thunder off the hook in their opening match but they did and that really painted the picture of their campaign.

The batting order just has never kicked into life this season and on the odd occasion they look to have put up a competitive score their bowlers have been blown away. It has just been one of those campaigns for the Sixers and even this early on proceedings they are reduced to the role of party poopers.

Team News

It probably comes as no surprise that the Hobart Hurricanes have named an unchanged squad for this match. They are highly likely to go in with the same XI too unless there is a late turn of events.

Sydney Sixers have Jackson Bird back from international duty and he is straight into their squad for this match. He replaces Mickey Edwards in the squad and will probably replace him in the line up as well. Moises Henriques is still missing while Jason Roy and Sam Billings play their final match.

Betting

I think the Hobart Hurricanes will win this match but they are pretty short for a side who have relied heavily on two men for their wins in the competition. With the pressure off them I expect a side with the quality of the Sydney Sixers to spoil a party of two from here on in so I’ll sit the match outcome out.

The bet I like is for over 36.5 boundaries here. Hobart are hitting plenty of boundaries at the minute and the Sixers are generally shipping them too. The worry is the lack of runs that the Sixers are putting up but with Jason Roy and Sam Billings off after this match I’m expecting them to want to go out with a bang while a possible return of Daniel Hughes would do no harm either. This is a quick scoring ground and I think we can go past this line for boundaries.

I’m also going to try Sam Billings to top score for the Sydney Sixers. He top scored in the first match of the season and this Hobart attack should suit him and the shorter squarer boundaries certainly should as well. There is a spot open in England’s ODI side with the absence of Ben Stokes and a big knock here might catch the selectors’ eye. At 7/1 he’s value in a misfiring batting line up.
