Big Bash League 2018-19 – Adelaide Strikers vs Melbourne Renegades Betting Preview

The Adelaide Oval hosts Sunday’s Big Bash League match when the defending champions Adelaide Strikers host the Melbourne Renegades in a battle which will determine the first team to make it to two wins this term.

Both sides won their opening matches in pretty comfortable style and while there is a long way to go after this one, for the one which goes into Christmas with two wins from two the turkey will taste extra sweet.

Adelaide Strikers

The champions Adelaide Strikers began their title defence with a pretty comfortable win over the Brisbane Heat in their opening match and now they play their first home match knowing that if they can pick up another success they will have broken the back of the early part of the season. The win in Brisbane wasn’t perfect but you wouldn’t necessarily expect it to be so soon into the campaign.

They will need to improve with the bat the longer the season goes on but not necessarily by too much given that they have such a solid bowling attack. It is a good attack for all conditions as well with some excellent seamers combined with a world class spinner. If they can find their best batting then they are going to be tough to stop.

Melbourne Renegades

Not too many would have expected the Melbourne Renegades to turn over the Perth Scorchers in their opening match but that is what they did. Much like Adelaide, the Renegades were not perfect by any means but they got the job done and should take an awful lot of confidence from that. If they can see off the Scorchers there isn’t a huge amount to fear in this one it must be said.

In keeping with the comparison with Adelaide, Melbourne Renegades need to bat better throughout the competition although in fairness their struggles were a little more predictable with both their opening batsmen missing on Test duty. The one thing we did see in their opening match is that they have plenty of bowling options to restrict sides.

Team News

Adelaide Strikers will be forced into a change here with Peter Siddle now back with the Australia squad. With a couple of their players higher up the order offering bowling options it could be that he is replaced with a batsman.

Joe Mennie has been added to the Melbourne Renegades squad for this match although it is not likely that he will play. Unless there is a late illness or injury then the Renegades are likely to be unchanged for the match.

Betting

Although the square boundaries at the Adelaide Oval are short enough to scare me, I do think this will be a relatively low scoring match. Once again both teams are better with the ball than the bat, which is becoming a real theme of this tournament in the early stages, and we saw that in the first matches for both these sides.

With that in mind I’m going to take under 320.5 runs here. This is a higher scoring ground than a couple we’ve played on so far but I’m not sure I would trust either of these batting line ups to pile on the runs unless someone breaks free and gets going. Even then both teams to make 160 feels unlikely. The under looks fair to me.
