Big Bash League 2018-19 – Melbourne Renegades vs Adelaide Strikers Betting Preview

The latest match of the Big Bash League season sees the Melbourne Renegades taking on the champions Adelaide Strikers at the GMHBA Stadium in Geelong with both sides currently outside the top four and eager to get back in there.

Both sides go into the encounter on four points for the campaign, with a couple of wins and a pair of defeats from their opening four matches. A win here will see the winner of the contest move up into third place in the table as we head towards the halfway mark.

Melbourne Renegades

The Renegades made a fast start to the campaign with a pair of opening wins but they have lost their last two and there has been a pretty obvious theme in both contests. They have failed to make 150 in either match and to be fair against the Sydney Sixers they put together one of the worst run chases you’ll find anywhere so it is fairly clear where their improvement needs to come.

It is not all bad for the Melbourne outfit though. They have shown good credentials with the ball throughout the campaign to date so if they can sort out their batting struggles then there is no reason why they can’t be contenders this season. Those issues were highlighted ahead of the competition though so it is a bit of a concern that no plans have been put in place to sort them.

Adelaide Strikers

The defending champions have had a hit and miss beginning to the campaign themselves with a pair of wins and a pair of defeats. They were dominant in the opening match of their title defence when they breezed past the Brisbane Heat but then things got a little tougher for them as they suffered defeats to the Perth Scorchers and the reverse match to the Renegades.

They rebounded from those defeats to see off the Sydney Thunder on New Year’s Eve and now they go looking for a second successive victory against a Renegades side who they will be after revenge against. Much like their opponents in this match, if they deliver with the bat then they have the bowling attack to see off anyone in the competition.

Team News

The Melbourne Renegades have made one change to their squad with Joe Mennie returning in place of Andrew Fekete. If Aaron Finch is dropped from the Test side early enough there is a chance he could be released to feature.

Adelaide Strikers have been forced into a change of their own with Peter Siddle with Australia. At the time of writing he hasn’t been released to play but that could yet happen. Wes Agar is ready to come in assuming Siddle remains unavailable.

Betting

This match is at the Geelong ground which isn’t actually too dissimilar to Adelaide Oval in that the square boundaries are fairly short and the straight boundaries a little longer but the dimensions of the ground are enough that betting on the outcome of the match is difficult and risky until we know the result of the toss.

It also dictates that the best market to go at in this match is the sixes one where actually the line at 9.5 looks a little on the low side even allowing for the fact that the two bowling attacks are fairly strong. There are still enough hitters in this match for us to get into double figures for sixes with the likes of Carey, Ingram, Christian and Nabi among others all capable of belting a long ball. I’m happy to take the over on what is a tiny line given the ground dimensions.
