Big Bash League 2018-19 – Melbourne Stars vs Hobart Hurricanes Betting Preview

There is one match in the Big Bash League on Monday and it sees the league leaders Hobart Hurricanes in action when they head to Melbourne to take on the Melbourne Stars in a key match for both teams.

Hobart can open up a four point lead which would be pretty significant with the season now into the second half of the campaign while the Stars can move into the top four with a victory and that is very much the place to be.

Melbourne Stars

Having won three matches in a spin not too long ago, the Melbourne Stars were looking like becoming favourites to earn a spot in the top four but with players departing for international duty they have now dropped two in a row and could do with ending that downturn pretty quickly, to maintain realistic control of their own destiny as far as that is concerned.

They have lost arguably their two best batsmen and two big bowling options and any team will have struggled to deal with that so that is unfortunate. What will be disappointing is that they haven’t really been competitive in their last two outings and that is the bare minimum that will be expected of them in this match.

Hobart Hurricanes

For the first time in this tournament we might see what the Hobart Hurricanes are made of in this match. The only reason I say that is because they suffered their first defeat in the previous match and it is always interesting to see how teams cope with that after a lengthy winning run. They should just look at the table and see the wonderful position that they are in but it isn’t always that easy.

In truth nothing really worked well for them in the match with the Melbourne Renegades. Every team has a bad night at the office and they need to ensure that it is just that and not something that manifests into anything significant. They are laced with players in decent form overall though so I would be surprised if they play poorly once again here.

Team News

Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa are all still away for this match but the Stars have made one change to their squad with Tom O’Connell coming into it. Whether they change too much remains to be seen.

Hobart Hurricanes have not panicked after their defeat last time out. They have named an unchanged squad once again and even though they were beaten in their previous match it would be a surprise if there are alterations to the starting XI.

Betting

I like one bet in this match which comes in the form of the most sixes market. Since their international players disappeared, Melbourne Stars have offered sixes totals of three and two and indeed of their 26 sixes in the competition, 17 of them have been hit by Maxwell, Handscomb or Stoinis and all three are unavailable here.

With that in mind I like the Hobart Hurricanes in this market. Only Alex Doolan in their top five hasn’t hit five sixes in the tournament to date and in James Faulkner and Jofra Archer they have big hitters down the order should they get enough of a bat. The boundaries here are big but the evidence currently suggests it will be the league leaders who hit the most sixes in this one.
