Big Bash League 2020-21 – Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Thunder Tips and Betting Preview

The second half of the double header in the Big Bash League sees the tournament heading to The Gabba in Brisbane for the final time as it is currently planned, although that could change should the final Australia vs India Test take place in Sydney rather than Brisbane. It sees the Brisbane Heat meeting the Sydney Thunder.

It hasn’t been the best start to the campaign for the Heat but they go into this match off the back of a win. The Sydney Thunder are absolutely flying and will be looking to regain top spot from their rivals Sydney Sixers with a win here.

Brisbane Heat

When the competition started off it looked like the Brisbane Heat were going to get left behind however slowly but surely they are beginning to work their way back into the tournament courtesy of two wins from their last three matches. They should have won the match in between too so there are signs of life for the Heat, however if this is to be their final home match of the campaign they are going to need to find a way to come up with the goods on the road.

There are signs that the Brisbane batting is beginning to come into form. The addition of Joe Denly could be the calming influence they need while Chris Lynn is still to come back and if he can hit some form then there is no reason why the Heat can’t have a good second half of the campaign, as long as they don’t fall into the sloppy standards they showed with the ball when they were away from The Gabba earlier in the competition.

Sydney Thunder

What else is there to say about the Sydney Thunder? After dropping the opening match against the Melbourne Stars from a winning position, they have now won five on the spin and are looking a very good side. When you get to this stage of the tournament and you look at potential tournament winners you want sides who have offered up the goods with the bat and the ball and who have won matches setting a score and chasing one down.

The beauty of the Thunder is they tick all four boxes. They have scored big with the bat and their bowling has twice restricted powerful batting teams to low scores. They have chased down a daunting target and defended scores. What I really like about them though is so many players are contributing to the side with the bat and the ball. They have three of the leading 15 run scorers in the competition as well as three of the leading bowlers. It is coming together nicely for the Thunder.

Team News

Brisbane Heat have named Chris Lynn in their squad for this match although it appears a decision on his availability will be made on game day. If he is fit to feature then Joe Burns’ return to the side could be a short lived one.

Sydney Thunder have named Adam Milne in their squad for this contest although it is understood that they will be monitoring the situation with his ankle which kept him out of the previous game after he rolled it falling over in his delivery stride. The Thunder could be unchanged if he doesn’t make it.

Betting

I think the Sydney Thunder will win this match but they are just a touch on the short side for an away team against a Brisbane Heat side who are actually showing some signs of life on home turf. I would imagine the atmosphere here will spur them on greatly with Ben Cutting coming back to The Gabba for the first time since his controversial exit and that might go against the Thunder. If pushed I’d still take the Thunder but I think the better bet comes in the form of the sixes where the line looks very low at 9.5.

We know The Gabba is a pretty tiny ground and these are two pretty big hitting teams. What I like about this bet is both teams have left handers who can smoke a long ball in their ranks and the longer matches have gone on at this ground the easier the scoring has become. We’ve just seen 10 sixes in the last match here which included the Sydney Sixers who don’t hit a huge number of sixes and don’t give many up either. The Thunder are the opposite and with Chris Lynn possibly back as well I like the over here.
