Big Bash League 2021-22 – Melbourne Renegades vs Sydney Sixers Tips and Betting Preview

The second part of the Tuesday double header of action in the Big Bash League sees the Melbourne Renegades once again looking to revive their season when they take on the Sydney Sixers in another game in Geelong.

The Renegades were humbled by the Sydney Thunder last time out and are now battling hard to make the finals. The Sixers have hit a rough patch but can consolidate their spot in the top three with a victory here but will see their chances of a top two finish fade should they lose.

Melbourne Renegades

The Melbourne Renegades got themselves back into this tournament when they won successive matches but we all knew that all they did was take advantage of two weakened foes. They had the chance to prove their worth in their last match against the Sydney Thunder but they were resoundingly beaten to leave them back at square one, albeit with a few more points to their name. They really need to produce a convincing display sooner rather than later.

One of the big problems the Renegades have is that their bowling attack keeps on going around the park and while at some point their batting will be able to go toe to toe with the team that slaps it everywhere, it isn’t a situation which can be profitably sustained. They really need to find a way to be competitive with the ball. The concern is that this is the third season in a row that they have had these problems so it is becoming negligible now.

Sydney Sixers

The Sydney Sixers started their title defence in fine form but the tide has got a little choppier for them in recent times. Their batters started the campaign like a house on fire but that has been completely doused out and now they look like they are struggling every time they take to the field. They have lost their last two matches and even the last match they won they almost stole the win and only just got over the line.

The one positive for the Sixers is that their bowlers have all been in pretty decent form throughout the campaign. There is no doubt in my mind that if the batters can start to put up the sort of scores they were delivering at the beginning of the season when the Sixers are more than capable of retaining their crown for a third straight year. That is going to need to happen because you couldn’t have any faith in that unit right now.

Team News

There are positives and negatives for the Melbourne Renegades. The positive is that Cameron Boyce is back in the squad for the first time this season. The negative is that Mohammad Nabi has left the camp and won’t be back this year. James Pattinson’s season is done too.

Sean Abbott missed the last match for the Sydney Sixers but he has been named in the squad for this one so he is likely to come back into the side. It is likely that he will replace Todd Murphy. Steve O’Keefe remains out injured.

Betting

This isn’t the easiest match to bet on because the Sydney Sixers’ batting unit has been very hit and miss in recent times but for all their faults and struggles they have had no issues hitting sixes so it might be that the best way to focus on this match is to bet on the sixes, particularly as the Melbourne Renegades have a run rate which is so negative that they have to address that if they are going to have any chance of making it into the finals.

That means that when targets are in sight they won’t be able to just saunter to the total, they will need to get there as quickly as they can. The good thing for the Renegades is that on this ground they have the ideal place to accelerate their run rate because it is a pretty small outfield and they have batters who can clear the ropes with ease. The Sixers should still continue to clear these ropes because the Renegades bowlers have gone to all parts all season. When putting it all together I like over 9.5 sixes in this one.
