Big Bash League 2021-22 – Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Stars Tips and Betting Preview

There is one match in the Big Bash League on Thursday and it promises to be a cracking contest as two of the bigger franchises in the competition collide when the Perth Scorchers take on the Melbourne Stars.

With Perth unable to play at home this match will take place at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, the home ground of the Renegades, and it will see two form sides meeting in what could be a big game for both teams.

Perth Scorchers

The Perth Scorchers saw their undefeated run to open up the season end last time out when they were beaten by the Sydney Thunder. There was always a sense that the constant travelling would catch up with them at some point and that is how it looked in that match. They looked flat and made mistakes that you just don’t associate with them and unfortunately for them they did it against a team who were on top of their game and made them pay.

The big issue is that they have had to travel again for this match and are entitled to be a little underdone once again. This will take a lot of their resolve to come out fighting and go again. The positive is that they rested one or two players against the Thunder who might well return here. The other positive is they have played twice on this ground this season and won both of them, although they were against the Melbourne Renegades so I’m not sure how much of a form guide that is.

Melbourne Stars

The Melbourne Stars got back to winning ways in their last match when they overcame a disastrous start to see off the Brisbane Heat. I guess given that he has now left their ranks that it was a good thing that Andre Russell didn’t really contribute to that success. That win has allowed them to attach themselves to the teams above them in the table and if they can follow that up with another success here they will move into the playoff places as they hit the halfway mark of their campaign.

If the Stars are going to push on from here and finally secure that elusive title they are going to have to improve with the ball. They have conceded 180 or more in four of their six matches and there is only so many times they are going to be able to win matches if that doesn’t change. They have no shortage of firepower with the bat but there isn’t a batting unit on the planet which is going to score more than 180 runs every game.

Team News

We know by now that the Perth Scorchers are carrying the same squad around with them. Tymal Mills missed out on the defeat to the Sydney Thunder and it would make sense if he returns here. Cameron Bancroft is another who will want to return.

Melbourne Stars are forced into a change with Andre Russell having left for international duty. Haris Rauf has arrived to replace him though and he could come into the side. Nick Larkin could also come in for someone to bolster the batting.

Betting

This is another match in which I like the sixes to land. This match is being played at the same ground as the second game on Wednesday was and we saw the destruction that was done in that match. There were 18 sixes in that match and there were even more than that when the Perth Scorchers played the Melbourne Renegades here recently. I would imagine that the match will be on the same pitch but there was plenty of live grass on it so it should play well here too.

These are two big hitting sides who carry plenty of power in their units. Perth have played two matches here and hit nine sixes and six sixes so they are going to contribute nicely to the six hitting total but the Stars have a whole line up who can go massive at any point, even when the scoreboard is against them as we saw in Brisbane on Monday. The sixes line for this match is only 11.5 and with the batters on show here and boundaries which we know are accessible I expect that to be covered.
