Big Bash League 2022-23 – Sydney Sixers vs Adelaide Strikers Tips and Betting Preview

The Big Bash League rolls into Coffs Harbour for the first and only time this season on Tuesday for what is a fairly big match between the Sydney Sixers and the Adelaide Strikers as the end of the regular part of the campaign looms on the horizon.

The Sixers go into the match in second spot in the table and will move to the summit with a win in this one. Adelaide are in fourth at the start of play but a queue of teams have suddenly gathered behind them so they could do with victory here.

Sydney Sixers

The Sydney Sixers lost their opening two matches, one of which was to the Adelaide Strikers, but since them they have won seven of the eight completed games they have played so they can certainly lay claims for being the form team in the competition right now. That is a remarkable run in its own right but when you consider there was a period of seven matches in just around two weeks and they had to manage their bowling resources it was even more incredible.

Sydney head into this match buoyed by their win over the Perth Scorchers last time out which might end up being more than just a regular victory down the line. They didn’t bat brilliantly well but when the pressure was on their bowlers stood up to the plate and got the job done. Teams always take a lot more out of winning matches when the pressure cooker intensifies so we should expect the Sixers to be bang on it in this one.

Adelaide Strikers

The Adelaide Strikers looked like they were going to embark on a huge season when they opened it up with three successive victories but they have only won twice in their last eight games and are in danger of undoing that good start. They head into this one off the back of two successive defeats, losses in which they haven’t batted at all well so they really need their batters to come to the party. They have their two Test stars back now so there is no excuses for them not to.

To be fair to those batters, one of the reason for their struggles is because their bowling has come apart at the seams. It was always likely to lose intensity once Rashid Khan left for the SA20 competition but injuries have bitten on top of that and for some reason even though he still sits in the top five in the wicket charts they have stopped playing Henry Thornton. Adelaide have three matches left but they do have the best net run rate in the league so two wins might get them into the finals.

Key Players

Sean Abbott is now the leading wicket taker in the competition after his three against the Perth Scorchers last time out. With Adelaide fragile in confidence if he can take a pole or two in his first spell he might open up the key to the game.

Travis Head returned to the side for the previous match with the Brisbane Heat and put himself up to open the batting despite Alex Carey being around. If he is going to bat there he needs to get the Strikers off to a decent start.

Betting

We are not at the Sydney Cricket Ground for this match, instead it is taking place at the International Sports Stadium in Goofs Harbour which is very much like other AFL or rugby grounds that we see around the world where the boundaries are on the short side. This ground doesn’t get used in the Big Bash very often but these two actually played here three years ago when the Sixers won by seven wickets with 176/6 getting chased down in the final overs. There were 15 sixes in that match.

This ground was also used last season when there were nine sixes in a match between the Sydney Sixers and the Perth Scorchers as 151/4 got chased down with an over to spare. I think we can naturally expect a higher scoring match with the Adelaide Strikers involved as they are a bigger hitting team than the Perth Scorchers and their attack is nowhere near as daunting. You can get a 9.5 sixes line for this one and the over looks pretty good to me.
