2024 concludes in the Big Bash League with what is now a tradition as the Adelaide Strikers play host to the last game of the year. The Perth Scorchers are the visitors for the New Year’s Eve showdown this time around.
The Strikers will be looking for some inspiration on a high profile night of action because they are not where they want to be in the table. The Scorchers will be looking for a win which would move them into the top two if they can get it.
Adelaide Strikers
The Adelaide Strikers are getting very close to having to replicate last season where they finished the campaign with a flourish and nearly went the whole way in the postseason. They have just one from their four matches and a fourth loss here would leave them with plenty of work to do in the 2025 leg of the competition. Even with a win they would still need to go on a run but they can’t really afford to lose this match even though it wouldn’t be terminal for their hopes if he did.
The Strikers have lost their last two matches but the common theme in all of their outings have been that they have been high scoring. Their batting looks in a really good place but their bowling unit have left a little to be desired. They haven’t been able to stem the flow of runs at all and the way they have set themselves up, if the pitches they play on offer little or nothing for the spinner then you get the feeling that they will be in trouble.
Perth Scorchers
We are all used to Perth Scorchers blazing the way in the league table in this competition so to see them in the middle of it with a pair of wins and a pair of defeats from their four matches feels quite strange. This isn’t a Perth squad which has been as strong as recent ones with Australia taking three key players away from them but they would probably have been expected to be doing better than they are. Nevertheless, a win here has them on the right path.
The Scorchers bowling is usually so reliable in this competition but they haven’t really hit their stride as a unit yet. To be fair to them they have been missing their best bowler at times with Jhye Richardson flirting with the Australia squad and a couple of key batters have been missing as well which has left their batting probably looking an explosive batter light. They have the chance to go well with the bat here though against an attack which leaks a lot of runs.

Key Players
Matt Short came to the party with the bat in the last match when he blitzed his way to 50 but he couldn’t go on from there and the Strikers came up short as a result. The Strikers will hope their captain can push on a little more to get them a much needed win here.
Cooper Connolly has been the bright spark for the Perth Scorchers with the bat this season and in what is anticipated to be a high scoring match then the former champions could use some runs from their number three.
Betting
Initially I was in two minds about this match but the fact that Australia have released Jhye Richardson to play in this contest swings it massively in the favour of the Perth Scorchers. This Adelaide bowling unit has gone around the park big time in the three matches they have lost and go into this match having conceded 215 last time out so they are going to have to rely on their batting to get the job done here but that isn’t going to be easy against a Scorchers attack boosted by Richardson being around.
If there is a weakness in this Perth outfit then it probably is with the bat where they have looked a batter light but that doesn’t feel as much of a problem against a bowling attack which is leaking runs at an alarming rate. I always say that Perth don’t need to put up big totals because they have the bowling unit that can defend any score but against this attack they should score more than they usually would. I have Perth a lot shorter than they are so I’m happy to take them.
