Big Bash League 2024-25 – Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Renegades Tips and Betting Preview

We are in the final week of the Big Bash League regular season and it continues on Tuesday when we head to Tasmania for a key clash between the Hobart Hurricanes and the Melbourne Renegades, one which is important for both teams.

The Hurricanes are assured of their spot in the finals and a win here would move them to within a win of securing a top two finish. Melbourne are running out of matches but if they come out on top here they will move into fourth place.

Hobart Hurricanes

This has been a wonderful season for the Hobart Hurricanes and they are back in the playoffs after a period away from it. You wouldn’t have said that was likely after their first match where they were rolled for 74 by the Melbourne Renegades and thrashed out of sight. Since then though they have won the five completed matches that they have played and had a washout in the other and now they are favourites to top the table come the end of the regular season.

The success of the Hurricanes has been very much down to their batting. They have torn sides apart at the top of the innings and when the need has arisen they have put them to the sword at the back end of it as well. That makes them very tough to beat because there isn’t a real weakness in their bowling attack. When you add in the motivation to get some revenge for that humbling that they took in the reverse fixture and the Hurricanes should be in good order here.

Melbourne Renegades

When you consider how emphatically the Melbourne Renegades won that match against the Hobart Hurricanes, to level out their record at 1-1 for the season, it is quite incredible that in the next six matches they have only added two more wins to go along with four more defeats. That has put them in a position where their season is basically on the line because although it is technically possible to get into the top four with eight points they would need more results to go their way that you would imagine is likely.

In the main it has been the batting which has failed the Melbourne Renegades this season and that department is going to need to show the undoubted class that it has if they are going to pick up the two wins that they need to get themselves into the finals. If they can find that then they could be dangerous when the postseason comes around because the bowling unit looks solid enough on paper but they have to come good with the bat else they’ve no chance.

Key Players

Tim David has plundered bowling attacks all around the park in this competition in recent times and his form has been important because this is a Hobart side who have been happy to be a batter light to ensure they have the required bowling resources.

Tom Rogers is the leading wicket taker in the competition this season and you would imagine if the Melbourne Renegades are going to win this match then they will need him to take wickets in the powerplay to contain the Hurricanes batting.

Betting

Although the Melbourne Renegades batting hasn’t fired at all times throughout the season, I do think the do or die nature of this match will see them come to the fore here and with the Hobart Hurricanes batting nicely and not really having too much in the way of competitive pressure on this match I expect this to be a high scoring game, or one with a number of boundaries at the very least. There is a women’s ODI here in a couple of days so you would imagine we’ll be at the edge of the square here.

That will certainly bring the boundaries into play and we have plenty of aggressive batters on show to pepper them. The boundaries line for this one is 37.5 which never feels enough on a ground which is one of the smaller in the country in certain places. Both teams need to win this for different reasons but the Renegades could do with a solid win so I’m expecting both teams to go after the bowling on a ground where you can do that. I like the over here.
