Big Bash League 2024-25 – Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Renegades Tips and Betting Preview

The Big Bash League heads back to the Optus Stadium in Perth on Tuesday for what is a huge clash between the Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Renegades, one which will have a big impact on the remainder of the season for both.

The Perth Scorchers are used to winning this tournament and could do with victory in order to keep their hopes of taking the title this term alive. The Renegades are behind Perth in the table and really can’t afford to lose this one.

Perth Scorchers

The Perth Scorchers certainly haven’t been as dominant as they have been in previous campaigns but they will move into the top four with a win in this match and actually go all the way up to second in the standings with three matches left to look to consolidate a top two finish. Generally Perth are very strong on home soil, not just because the conditions are faster here than elsewhere and the ground dimensions are much different but also the flight length and everything else. They have won two of their three home matches this term.

One thing which has impacted the Scorchers this season has been injuries and they haven’t been helped with international call ups to key players as well. With that in mind, the Scorchers will be delighted that the Test series is over and that they are able to call on the services of a couple of key men here. Perth generally go well with the ball, especially on this ground, and if their batting can come to the party too they are going to be tough to beat.

Melbourne Renegades

There was a lot expected of the Melbourne Renegades after they did some decent work to their squad in the off season but once again that hasn’t translated into results on the field and the loss in the Melbourne derby at the weekend has left them 2-4 for their season. Luckily for them they have a positive run rate so they could get into the finals with five wins but were they to lose this match then they would have to win out for that to happen so this is a key game for the Melbourne side.

The problem that the Renegades have had in recent times is that they can’t seem to put a complete performance together. They either bowl well but struggle with the bat or they bat better than before, as they did in the Melbourne derby at the weekend, but then their bowling doesn’t come up with the goods. The two need to align much more over the remainder of the season if they are to reach the top four, which with their squad should be the minimum requirement for this group.

Key Players

It took a while for Finn Allen to come to the party for the Perth Scorchers but he is definitely there now and if he can get after this Melbourne Renegades bowling unit at the top of the order then he could have the hosts in a very promising position.

Jacob Bethell is really starting to look the part in the centre of the batting order for the Melbourne Renegades but he hasn’t yet gone on and made that match defining score. Against a quality bowling unit like this one this should be a good time to do it.

Betting

It is hard to go against the Perth Scorchers on their home ground at the best of times let alone when they have two seriously good international cricketers back in the form of Mitchell Marsh and Jhye Richardson. Richardson has the potential to damage the Melbourne Renegades top order while Marsh has a point to prove and the quality to put any side to the sword. Melbourne have just been outplayed by the Melbourne Stars too which doesn’t bode well for them.

There just isn’t enough consistency in the Renegades side right now and when you consider they’ll do well to tear this Perth attack apart with the bat and probably lack a genuine top class bowler to maintain pressure even with Kane Richardson back, I find it hard to go against a Perth win here. On their own the price isn’t great but if you take them on a small looking handicap of 4.5 wickets or 10.5 runs the price becomes something much more backable.
