Big Bash League 2025-26 – Hobart Hurricanes vs Perth Scorchers Tips and Betting Preview

The second part of the double header in the Big Bash League to open up 2026 takes us back to the Ninja Stadium where the Hobart Hurricanes will continue their title defence when they host the former champions Perth Scorchers.

The Hurricanes are making their way towards the top of the table and a win here will send them to the summit, while a big win for Perth last time out has seen them move into the top three and they will want another victory to pull clear of the chasing pack.

Hobart Hurricanes

The Hobart Hurricanes are sitting exactly where they want to be in terms of their title defence. They are in the top two courtesy of four wins in their opening five matches, four points clear of the team in third place and a win here will send them to the top of the table and will strengthen their hopes of a top two finish and the two bites of the cherry at making the final that comes along with it. Add in starting the new year in style and the Hurricanes won’t be short of motivation.

The Hurricanes came into the tournament with a power packed batting unit but the absence of Tim David is starting to test their ability to go hard throughout the innings, which is the way that they want to play their cricket. The good thing for the Hurricanes is that they have a bowling unit where nearly everyone is an international cricketer and capable of fulfilling the role that is given to them. If that attack works well then Hobart are entitled to be hard to beat.

Perth Scorchers

It has been an up and down start to the season for the Perth Scorchers, especially by their previous exploits where we are used to seeing them blaze a trail at the top of the pile and dominating the competition from there. They have a couple of wins and a pair of losses but they go into this match off the back of an emphatic win over the Sydney Thunder in their last game and a repeat of that performance will serve them very well here you would think.

The Scorchers dominated with the bat in that match against the Thunder. They were given some buffet bowling to get stuck into but to their credit they put it away and it always looked like they had a score where assuming they didn’t bowl as badly as the Thunder did they were always likely to defend it and that is exactly the case. So a repeat of that showing with the bat and the ball will make them an awkward side to beat once again.

Key Players

Matthew Wade wellied 43 from 20 late on in the innings to get the Hobart Hurricanes home against the Melbourne Renegades in their last match and it will be no bad thing if he has another big innings in him here.

Ashton Turner probably deserved a ton in the last match for the Perth Scorchers but he was stranded at the non-strikers end when it really mattered in the final over and had to make do with 99*. The Scorchers will hope for another big innings from their captain here.

Betting

The Perth Scorchers won last time out but I would be absolutely amazed if the Hobart Hurricanes bowl as badly as the Sydney Thunder did in that match. If they do they deserve to lose but the two leg spinners on show for the Hurricanes could be the difference here. To be fair to Perth they played the leg spin of the Thunder pretty well but there were some pies served up which I don’t expect to be delivered by Rishad Hossain and Rehan Ahmed in particular.

The Perth Scorchers don’t have a bad bowling unit by any means but they will have to do without Josh Inglis in their middle order and that might be significant and if this is a tight game then I would expect Nathan Ellis and Chris Jordan to get the Hurricanes over the line more than I would trust the Scorchers death bowling to do. I don’t think there is a huge amount between the two sets of batters so if the bowlers settle this I favour the Hurricanes, especially on home soil.
