Big Bash League 2025-26 – Melbourne Renegades vs Sydney Sixers Tips and Betting Preview

2026 begins with a double header of action in the Big Bash League and it begins with two sides who are lower down the table than they would want to be battling it out when the Melbourne Renegades host the Sydney Sixers.

Both teams have just one win in their campaign so far and with teams above them starting to pick up speed there is a feeling that they will both need a win here so we should be guaranteed a competitive opening to 2026.

Melbourne Renegades

The Melbourne Renegades would have gone into the season with heightened expectations after some good work ahead of the campaign in terms of the additions to their squad. They haven’t yet seen the fruits of their labour though because they have won just one of their three matches to date. To be fair to the Renegades, their two losses were both to the defending champions Hobart Hurricanes and most teams are going to lose to them so this will be more of a test for them.

The other thing which hasn’t helped the Renegades is playing at Geelong for their two home matches so far. The ground dimensions there make matches a bit more of a lottery so they will probably be glad to be back to a more reasonable sized ground here. The Renegades probably haven’t batted as well as they could do against the Hurricanes so they will be looking at their top three to start delivering the goods again, as Tim Seifert did in their first match.

Sydney Sixers

The Sydney Sixers only have one win to their name this season too but their victory has come from an extra match so they are probably even more keen to get the job done here. After getting their first win in their third game, the Sixers were back to losing ways in their latest outing when the Melbourne Stars were far too good for them. The real issue that the Sixers have is their only win so far is against the Sydney Thunder who are bottom of the table so they could do with another win to get people believing in them.

If there is a positive for the Sixers it is that their last match was on Boxing Day so they have had the better part of a week to work out where they have been going wrong and you would imagine they will have put the necessary things in place to hit the ground running in 2026. If Sydney are going to push for a place in the top four over the second half of the season then they are going to need to find more runs. If they can do that they should be fine and they certainly have the players to do it but form can be an awkward mistress.

Key Players

Tim Seifert seems to be the player who dictates the Melbourne Renegades batting effort so the men in red will be looking at the Kiwi to get them off to the sort of start which can ensure they put up a score capable of winning this match.

Daniel Hughes made 60 in the loss to the Melbourne Stars for the Sydney Sixers last time out and if he can keep going well then you would imagine a couple of those below him will bat around him to sort out the magenta men and their batting woes.

Betting

When this fixture was on the horizon I was eyeing up a punt on the Melbourne Renegades to hit the most sixes but the absence of Adam Zampa is beginning to put me off, although in truth the prices that are out there aren’t really floating my boat. If Zampa was to bowl a shutdown four overs it would have done no harm to Melbourne hitting the most sixes. I would still expect that to happen but I’d have liked a bigger price than what we are getting.

With that in mind, I’ll take a punt on Jack Edwards to get back to covering his performance lines. The Renegades have the new ball bowlers to get him to the crease and the fact that he won’t be facing Zampa in the second half of the innings will help his run scoring, while although he had a quiet match against the Melbourne Stars, he is still the joint third highest wicket taker in the competition so he could easily cover a 34.5 line with the ball in hand. He should contribute with the bat and catches are never out of the equation so I think he can get back to covering this line, which he did in his first three matches this term.
