We have a double header of Big Bash League action on Sunday and it begins at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where the Melbourne Derby takes place when the Melbourne Stars play host to the Melbourne Renegades.
The Stars were replaced at the top of the table by the Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday but they can get their top spot back with a win here while the Renegades probably need a win more desperately given that they sit second from bottom going into the game.
Melbourne Stars
The Melbourne Stars have had an excellent start to the season with four wins from five but they lost their unbeaten record last time out when the Brisbane Heat came from the clouds to knock them off with a perfectly timed run chase. The Stars will be looking to get back to winning ways here and if they do that they will return to the top of the table and will be looking in a solid position to push on and secure a top two finish which brings plenty of advantages with it.
The one interesting thing about the defeat to the Brisbane Heat last time out is that it is the first time all season that they had to bat first. I said going into that match that I had my doubts over them when that would be the case and we saw why. When they have a score in front of them they rise to the challenge accordingly but when they are having to defend one it is a completely different dynamic and unless they get early wickets they are vulnerable at the back end of the innings, as we saw in that loss to the Heat.
Melbourne Renegades
The Melbourne Renegades are in massive danger of seriously underachieving this season. To be fair to them, they have played the fewest number of matches of any team in the competition but just one win in four outings certainly isn’t the return they would have been looking for. The good thing is that the teams above them haven’t really got away from them but they will do if the men in red don’t latch onto them soon so this is a big game for the visiting side.
The Renegades went well in their opening match with the bat in hand but they haven’t been able to get to 165 in their three innings since then and that is the task for them here. They have a bowling attack which should be doing much better than they are but until the batters put regular runs on the board for them it probably isn’t going to matter. The chance to halt the progress of their rivals and get their season back on track should be a strong motivator for the Renegades.

Key Players
Marcus Stoinis top scored for the Melbourne Stars in their last match against the Brisbane Heat but the 122.85 strike rate on a belting batting track probably wasn’t what was needed so the green men will hope their skipper has more fireworks in him here.
We are seeing one Pakistan overseas player find his straps elsewhere in the tournament and the Melbourne Renegades will hope that Muhammad Rizwan can do the same here and lead their side to a big score which they need.
Betting
I don’t know if they will win this match or not but I do expect to see the Melbourne Stars get off to a decent start when they get the bat in hand. There is only one Melbourne Renegades bowler who is going at less than eight an over this season and that is Adam Zampa who misses out on the derby because of injury so whoever it is who takes the ball for the visitors will likely be expensive unless someone finds some serious improvement.
When you counter that with the Melbourne Stars batting so deep that they can go after the bowling in the powerplay and it wouldn’t be a surprise were the men in green to get themselves off to a flyer. We don’t need to worry about them going slowly if there is a low run chase because they will love to rub the noses of their rivals in it so taking the Stars to go past 48.5 runs after the opening six overs of their innings looks like the ideal way to play this one.
